Dr. Grabow Pipes

Since this is a Dr. Grabow forum, this will be a little embarrassing. I have only one Dr. Grabow in my rotations; a Grand Duke bulldog with ‘leaves’(?) carved on/around the rim and two ‘leaves’ carved on the far-side of the bowl. I have noticed some fine linear marks under the finish which indicates the sanding process left them but yet, they are not all that noticeable. About three months ago, I made a quick trip into Macon for something (old Timers) and forgot to take my regular pipes. So I whipped into the CVS Pharmacy to see what they had and found on the peg-board this great looking Dr. Grabow and ON SALE. I purchased it and a pouch of my great-grandmothers favorite, Bugle Tobacco, packed and lit up. A most satisfying smoke from the first puff. Since then I have tried Virginias, English, other burlies in this pipe and it has never failed to give me a great smoke.

I purchased some Medico Charcoal filters when the regular paper filter was full and at the moment, I like the experience. Years ago when I bought only Medicos, Dr. Grabows and Yello Boles, I would throw away all filtering devices.

I only use the filters on the rare occasion that I smoke an aromatic, they seem to smooth out bitey tobaccos for me. I recently accidentally figured out that Savinelli balsa filters will fit Grabows and I prefer them to the paper filters on the rare occasion I use a filter.

Funny, it seems we start out not using the filters. Must be when were yyoung and crazy, then we hit mid 40's and use the filters as wells as: bi-focals, stool softeners, and heating pads....

I'll use either Grabow or Meds. For awhile, when I thought filters were for
wimps, I didn't smoke Grabows, even though that's what I started on.
When I first started I tried Velvet out of a Grabow. Then Capt. Black Royal and
White. I was using the filters then. Maybe thats why The Capt. tasted better.
When I smoked it without filters, it was lousy!
Maybe I'll give the Captain another shot since now I use the filters.
