I really like Mulberry so I decided to make a pipe from it. Had problems drilling the airway. Its right at the bottom but way off center to the right. Also chamber is rough as I don't have the right kind of bit for drilling them.It will take a filter.Haven't tried to smoke it yet.

This is what it came out of. Stump came from the farm we used to have.

| OS, that's some of the prettiest grain I've seen anywhere. Do let us know how it smokes. |

OS, Beautiful pipe. Really curious about the smoke. Your talents astound.
The grain reminds me of a trick we tried many years ago. We filled a coffee can with BB's...you know Red Rider BB's.....Then we added diluted black stain. Then we inserted a bald pipe that had a brown finish...Pulled the pipe out of the can "straight up"...Lacquered it, and had the prettiest Straight Grain pipe you ever saw. We made a hundred or so, just to see if ti was practical....Wasn't.....ted |

Smoked a 1/2 bowl of CH in it this morning. Kinda tasted like burnt wood and something else I can't identify. If I can get a cake built in it might make a good smoke. Even though the airway is off center it burned right down to the bottom of the bowl with very little unburnt tobacco. That surprised me! _________________ The only thing shorter than my memory is a certain part of my anatomy! |

Doesn't surprise me it burned all the way to the bottom, Ed. despite the off center drilling. My ex-wife once made me a pipe with two draft holes. The first one came out all the way over on the side of the bowl. The second was where it was supposed to be. I never had a problem smoking all the way to the bottom. I'd show you a picture, but when we split, I got rid of everything that reminded me of her, pipes and all.
BTW, that is quite striking grain on this pipe.

I looked at this early this morning, and now again, and I just can't get over how pretty that pipe is. You are an amazing fellow, Ed. That is some pretty work.

Thanks Gents. The grain in Mulberry is unlike any wood I've worked with. Wish I could post a full sized photo, these re-sized photos don't show the grain to well. _________________ The only thing shorter than my memory is a certain part of my anatomy! |

BEAUTIFUL PIPE AND GRAIN!!! I love the light finish, too. I think it will smoke fine with a little carbon or honey on the walls of the bowl.
I have never been convinced that an off-center hole meant a bad smoke. I have a few and they smoke fine. I am inlcined to believe, that if anything, it could impart a swirling action of the draft, thereby aiding in complete combustion. I've never checked, but someone is bound to have patented an idea like that. If not, well there you go, Ed!
I'll trade you a bunch of orphan pipes and some Mixture #79 for it! --RJ--
