I don't see the CDL's mentioned much. Does anyone have one or smoke one much? What is your opinion of them? Were they Sparta made? I've been thinking of getting one for my collection. Maybe even smoke it!

I have six of them but they are on a card hanging on the wall. I've had a couple in rotation and they smoke fine. The aluminum shank can get a bit warm sometimes.
Don't recall what I did with those I was smoking, must have shipped them out during one of my attempts to thin out my collection.

I'll bump into one eventually Ed. Not high on my must have list, just something I was curious about.

I've made several comments about CDL, but can't find them now.
Started in about 1974/5 and were advertised as Cooler, Drier, and Lighter. We never found the right method to sell them. Finally put them in a couple of catalogues with some success.

I've bought about 10 dozen from the factory at between $2.00 and $4.00. Dave Whitney can say how they sold (at $29.95).

Maybe there are a couple left at the factory. I'll ask Robert if you really want one.
Ed was kind when he said the aluminum got warm. HOTTER than the hinges of H*%&.

I know most guys would disagree with me, but I smoke a wire brushed apple CDL, as well as a wide squat bulldog (like an 82), and my son also smokes a CDL...I'd say the aluminum shank gets slightly warm only.  I smoke aromatics only, I can't speak for non aros.  I don't have the hot problem.  The smoke I get is actually rather cool...they are light weight...and since the filter works well with these, it's a dry smoke as well.  For me (maybe I'm one of the few), I think the acronym is true.

I have 8 of them.  Smooth finish and wire finish.  All smoke absolutely grand.  I smoke non-aros in them.  I rarely have occassion to touch the metal shanks, but when I have, they were never hot to my touch.

Had one for awhile and it smoked fine.  With me it was a complete lack of eye appeal.  Looks like a plumber decided to make a pipe. I had the same problem with my one and only viking.  Guess i'm just not a metal pipe guy.

I've yet to make friends with Vikings, Kirstens, Falcons...I suppose for the same reason.  I guess that I just prefer a wood bowl and shank over an aluminum tube.  But as stated, I do like the CDL.  Far from a favorite pipe, but the 2 I keep are good smokers.
