Got this one off Ebag. I thought this one would be an easy to refinish since it has all those flat surfaces-WRONG!! I may-one of these days re-do this one. Ain't happy with the way it turned out. Can't see it in the pics but the finish is not as nice as I'd like it to be,several fine scratches.

This is the second pipe that has a stem made from some weird material!! Wish there was some info on what they were using or experimenting with when this one was made.
All I know is that it is not vulcanite-at least not the type most commonly seen. I have restored literally hundreds of stems, mostly vulcanite, some ABS,some nylon(Medico). These two are different!! I'm sure there are a bunch of them out there from this era. Pics show the difference between a vulcanite stem and this one while working them.
First pic shows what happens when put in a bleach bath. Vulcanite comes out dull black.
This one shows what it looks like after some sanding.
Next one shows a vulcanite stem after some sanding.
Found out also that like ABS and Nylon this one is easy to overheat when buffing. I "burned" a small place just in front of the button where it is very thin. Never had this problem with a vulcanite stem. _________________ The only thing shorter than my memory is a certain part of my anatomy! |

Yep, got one of them -- it even looked better than your UNTIL you got through working on yours! Another splendid job Ed!
With copious amounts of medication and drastic reductions in available funds, I have my lustification quite under control, thank you. That is, as long as I don't see a picture of that pipe again . . . --RJ-- |

Argh!!!!!!!!! Now BOTH of my eyes are twitching. I sort of look like Chief Inspector Dreyfus when he sees Inspector Clouseau (sp?) again in the Pink Panther movies. --RJ-- |
