Dr. Grabow Pipes

Began smoking a pipe as soon as I could. 'Bout 1971. Remember studying them in the Sears Roebuck Catalog before that. Yes, Sears used to sell pipes and guns in their catalog.

Made a couple of bad selections at first. First decent pipe I remember was a Civic Royal, full bent. It's retired now. Experimented with almost anything, except Dr. Grabows. I had learned early in my research that Dr. Grabows were inferior convenience store pipes, and no self-respecting pipe smoker or tobacco aficionado smoked them.

Many, many years later, maybe 1999, I was away from home without a pipe. Bought a full bent Dr. Grabow. I was in love before I reached home. Wore it out because I didn't want to smoke another, and I didn't use the tampon filters.

I had shopped on eBay for other things and I began thinking maybe I could find some good pipes there. Wasn't any selection in the small town where I lived. Found more Dr. Grabows than I ever knew existed. Dozens of models! I wondered "what are Linkman's Dr. Grabows" and "Are they better than non-Linkman Dr. Grabows?" "What's an Eldorado?" "Is a Grand Duke grander than a Duke?"

Pipes.org and other discussion boards weren't much help. Posters there knew all about Dunhills and Kaywoodies, but no one seemed to know much about Dr. Grabows. I wanted to be an educated smoker, and so began my quest.

Now I have drawers of Dr. Grabows representing 7 or 8 decades of production. Not all of them are great, but every one of them is better than some higher priced pipes I've bought.

Dr. Grabows are like Timex or Casio watches. They won't earn you any envious fans, but they can tell the time for a lot less money. And when they wear out, you can afford another.

I agree.

I have many pipes that cost a lot more,but few that smoke better than my Grabows.

Tend to agree. I've got some much higher priced pipes but the Dr Grabows smoke just as good if better Smile
