Anyone who lives or otherwise knows the Myrtle Beach area - can you tell me of any antique shops, thrift shops and/or auction houses that I can visit to look for pipe stock while I am there for my Army outfit's re-union next weekend?

I have difficulty finding stock at reasonable (cheap) prices here on the west coast and figured that SC is a more likely place since I'll be there anyway.

I had wanted to visit the Cornell & Diehl tobacco plant but they are at the Richmond show and I will be leaving the area on Tuesday morning Oct 6th so that didn't work out.

Thanks

Travers

Are you going to visit Low Country Pipes?  I always like to stop in for some tobacco and a smoke when in the area.

I've read your comments about them - Don't see why I wouldn't stop in. Where are they located?  I don't know the area at all but will probably rent a car, at least for a day or two.

Lefty, I go to MB about twice a year and cannot think of any Antique shops in the area. MB is golf, food, and beach.

I'd try Georgetown.....about 45 minutes south on hwy 17.....at least the phone book. Georgetown is the type place for Antiques.....ted

Georgetown is doable.  How far is Charleston - it might be worth a trip through the yellow pages as well.

Low Country Pipes is in Little River, just above North Myrtle Beach.  It is at the intersection of Hwy 17 and Hwy 90.  The address is 2 Hwy 90.  The intersection is a little confusing but it's not too hard to find.  It's in a two-story brick building right on the corner.  It's worth a trip to me each time for all the different tobaccos they have - probably more than I've seen at any other store at one time, both bulk and tins.  Of course, you can order from them online (www.smokingpipes.com) but I love to just stand at the tobacco wall and stare.

There is all kinds of shopping in Myrtle Beach, but as ted mentioned, I can't think of any shops of the type you're looking for.  There may be some but I haven't really looked for them, I guess.  Hope you find some goodies!

Hope you have a great time!  My dad was able to go to his unit's reunions a couple of times and I think he really enjoyed it.

I'm back from my re-union.  Didn't find any pipes in the thrift shops.  I was impressed with the beach - Myrtle Beach is really a nice one.

Some things never change.  Back when we opened Menwith Hill Station in 1960 in Harrogate, England (there were English protests about an American Spy base on British soil), I wasn't the only Democrat but darned near.  They ragged on JFK.  Fifty years later, they were ragging on Obama.  For the most part I kept my cool but did blow my stack once at a clearly demeaning racist remark.

At least I wasn't the only pipe smoker - there were 3 of us out of the 107 people attending.

Now I have almost 3 weeks to get ready for my 6 week trip to the Philippines and Thailand.

3 of us out of the 107 people attending..not a bad ratio for this day and time (2.8 percent).  Glad you enjoyed it.  Maybe someday I'll get to a reunion of one of my old units.

They ragged on JFK.  Fifty years later, they were ragging on Obama...most of us develop our political convictions early and see no reason to change them as we get older.
Terry
