RALEIGH, NC - As expected, NC Governor Beverly Perdue today signed into law a bill prohibiting smoking in many public places, most notably restaurants and bars. Most other work places dodged the bullet this time and smoking is still allowed in tobacco shops and cigar bars as well as private, non-profit clubs. Smoking is, however, prohibited by law in all state government offices and vehicles. Smoking had already been prohibited in most of these anyway by agency policy. The new law goes into effect January 2, 2010.

For those interested, here is a link to the text of the bill:

Edit:  Pardon me, I stated that last sentence above incorrectly - the new law goes into effect now; the law provides for the ban to go into effect on 1/2/10.

This was Rep. Hugh Holliman's (D-Davidson) third year of trying to get a bill passed. It passed this year by 6 votes. Defeated the last two.

He says he'll be back next year to try and get the bill strengthened.

Thanks Steve for keeping  us informed....ted

Sure thing, Ted.  I'm counting on him not being able to get anything done next session since it will be the short session.  And I'm hoping to get him defeated in the 2010 election before the next long session.  I think we've got a pretty good chance.

Steve, I didn't realize it till just now, but Holliman is from your home county. Good luck with the election.

You are right about the short session. Probably nothing will happen.
