I recently purchased the Golden Duke 82 pictured below.  I thought it was unusual, because it is ringless.  I actually prefer ringless bulldogs, but I've never seen a ringless 82.  I don't see any evidence of purchaser modification.  The contours are still correct, and the bowl is lacquered everywhere except portions of the flat of the rim.  Do any of you know whether this was a standard variation of the 82, or was this an inadvertent omission from the manufacturing process?

ABS stem? If so I'd say it's a fairly recent made pipe. Factory hasn't put beads on their bulldogs in several years.

I can't remember ever seeing an older Grabow bulldog without beads.

Yep.  Probably after 94/95. Still a dandy looking pipe..

Thanks Ed.  I'm not sure how to distinguish ABS from vulcanite.  The stem on this pipe doesn't seem to have any tell-tale green oxidation, so maybe that's one clue.

Couple of ways to tell an ABS stem. Quickest is to look at the slot in the end of the stem. They are narrower and taller than the slot in rubber stems, some are almost square. Also the button itself will be thicker and wider than what you see on a rubber stem. On straight tapered stems the taper is different--starts further back away from the shank than rubber stems.. If you look through the end of an ABS stem most of them have a square or rectangular airway through the stem.

I just compared this pipe to several other 82s I own, which definitely have vulcanite stems.  This pipe has a thicker bit.  Additionally, the stem is push style, rather than screw in.  Also "Dr. Grabow" is written in block style letters.  Therefore, this is likely a newer model.  Rather cool.  I never knew Grabow made these.

Thanks again guys!

That's very nice looking newer 82, congrats sir.

I think they look great without the rings, and that one less thing about them to get bumped, and damaged.

Does anyone know if they're still making 82s in Sparta?  I'd like to order more if possible.
