I have recently started on a tin of St. James Flake for the first time and I am getting a lot of saltiness in the taste.  In fact, it has gotten so salty at times that I thought I must have used the salt and alcohol on my pipe one time too many.  I tried some other tobacco in it though and got no saltiness.  I wondered if anyone else had experienced this with St. James Flake.  I noticed in another thread that Gig was smoking SJF so thought I would post here and see.

Nope not salty at all when I smoked it the other day. I don't know why that would be Steve.

Thanks Gig, I appreciate your input.  It was really strange, like the cook stubbed his toe while salting the stew.  Maybe it was just a fluke.  I suppose time and further smoking will tell.  I'll get on that.

I had another two bowls of St James Flake over the weekend and Steve, it's definitely not salty mate. Smile

Thanks for the confirmation.  I smoked some more in a different pipe and didn't really get any saltiness to speak of.  I'm going back to the original pipe and see what happens.

Here's something else:  I still have a cold, but smoked some St. James Flake this afternoon to see how it did.  This bowl started off okay but about 1/3 of the way down, it turned bitter as quinine!  I mean yuk.  Never had this happen.  Smoked some McC No. 27 Va and it was okay, so I don't think this was completely my cold.  Anybody ever had this or similar happen?

Heaven sake Steve you must have a bad tin of St James flake. Mine has never tasted salty or bitter. Please try another tin of it, you may have better luck or it could possibly just be your body chemistry Smile

Yeah, the first few bowls I had were great, Gig, I don't know what happened.  I know it can be a great tobacco, so I won't give up yet.
