I was lighting my Omega the other day and while puffing thought the bowl rim looked funny. Sure enough it looked like I'd just burned it. After cursing myself for a durn fool, (not my exact words), I scraped at the discolored rim with my fingernail. It scraped off! All I had done was to burn the finish as the wood underneath was fine.
After that the pipe would look funny with a partially finished rim so I used lacquer thinner to strip the rest of my pipe. Under that shiny finish was a beautiful piece of wood.
The wood under the lacquer is a uniform satin finish red-brown. The burl features are seen better so my pipe is prettier now.
As far as I can tell it smokes the same as before. I do know to be careful of the rim now.

Cool.
Try rubbing in a little olive oil to the wood and it will look the balls.
Would like to see a pic!
There's a thread for "tricked" out omegas somewhere here. They seem the most often modified pipe around...
Personalizing it is fun.
Thanks,
Tom
