As a topic in the Contemporty Crebow Fourm we should share notes re what DG pipes are available OTC, where they're available, and who is selling them.
According to recent IP&A sources RiteAid, CVS and Walgreens should stock Grand Duke and something else DG, like Savoy or Full Bent. Some WalMart stores also carry DG.
OTC - over the counter

I wonder of the e-tailers that also have Brick & Mortar shops have the Grabows available in the store and on display?
There is a CVS on Boyston Street that has a Lark on the peg. I should take a peek at it and see if its a hangover from the Lane Era...
Good idea btw.

Well, in Temple, Texas, neither CVS, WalMart or Walgreens have pipes of any kind -- at least the last time I checked. Same story with the stores I checked in Rosenberg, Texas a few months ago. Most sold pipe tobacco, but NO PIPES.
The TOBACCO JUNCTION on Adams street in Temple DOES have a handful of Dr. Grabows -- I don't think their stores at other locations do.
Most pipe shops, like several in Austin, just snicker if you even mention the name, "Dr. Grabow" in their most esteemed presence. --RJ-- |

Several months ago, I purchased a Grand Duke bulldog at a CVS but I do not know if they still carry pipes since this one was on sale.
RiteAid in Georgia does not carry pipes of any description; in fact a couple that I stopped at carried no tobacco products at all. _________________ Happy puffing

Checked with the CVS in Bryan, Texas. They carry Grand Dux and Savoy. They're behind the counter and stacked on rods, so I don't know how many they have, or if there might be other pipe lines behind those 2 in front. Probably 18-24 in stock.
This marketing isn't going to sell pipes. First the customer has to get the attention of the over-stressed or disinterested employee behind the counter. And then either purchase the first pipe on the rod, or risk irritating the clerk by insisting on seeing every other shape they have.
I'm not going to do that, and I doubt DG customers will come away satisfied with their purchase. IP&A has to find a better way. |

At a Walgreens about a year ago:
Mike: Can I come behind the counter to look at the pipe tobacco; bad eyes?
Clerk: What do you want and I will get it for you?
Mike: I won't know that until I see what you have.
Clerk: We have several different kinds ; what do you want?
Mike: Look; can I come behind the counter to look?
Clerk: No!
Mike: That's okay; I will just go to some other drug store from now on, and please tell your manager why I will no longer shop here. _________________ Happy puffing

Tobacco is locked behind glass doors in my grocery stores now. You have to get a cashier to leave her checkout line to unlock the doors for you.
Forget pipes. They ain't in there. |

I ain't marketing. It ain't Mercahdising. Its an Albatross.
ckr had the same proble when attemping to buy a Grabow that Miike and David both experience. The solution is to go in early in the morning when no one else is there. Thats what I do. Most of these places are even open all-night. |

this is why I buy new. Kind of an experiment. If I clear the rack, I can see if it is refilled with pipes.
ON A SIDE NOTE:
It was said in another forum that Dr. G probablly scared away as many new pipesmokers as it obtained. Huh? The implication was that they smoked like sh!t. Huh?
drbridges has been preaching that DrG ought to re-establish the booklet for new pipesmokers. Although there is tons of info on the net, I agree.
If someone, ON A WHIM, is thinking, oh.. I'll try smoking a pipe, they aren't going to go out and buy a $200 dollar pipe! They're jsut not, nor wood they appreciate it. My boss bought one of my pipes. Artistically, its one of a few I'd consider High grade. He bought it for the art. Well, he decide to smoke it. Well, that experiment lasted about ONE bowl. He has since told me his father tried it back in the day but didn't continue for the same reasons...
Anyway Gents, Politely assert yourselfs in the drugstore. Just do it early AM or even late PM. I've found the clerks like the human interaction as opposed to just standing there staying awake! |

Please don't let this get out, Sparta is a small town and couldn't stand the traffic. There is a Mom & Pop Drug store (Halsey Drug) that has a complete Skliner mounted on the wall. It is about 9 ft. long and has 10-12 dozen Grabows on it. Many are left over from Lane and some from pre-Lane. NOW THE PROBLEM. As it has always been with such a display, it is mounted so high that no-one can reach it. Ask the girl behind the counter to go get a stepladder and climb up to get a pipe. Bet your butt she'll be grinning when she gets there! Halsey's is the Drugstore I use, so they'll bear it.
Next time I'm in I'll do an inventory and post it here. I'd be glad to buy anything for anyone for cost and shipping and maybe a small contribution to this forum.
