A nice little 40

Check out this 40 I got BIN with free shipping. It's stamped 40 and has a spade in the stem, however there are no other stamping at all.

Strange it's only stamped 40, nice pipe.

I like it!

Tim...that pipe does not meet standards, and should be dispositioned to Greenville South Carolina.

Some fine looking graining there!

Nice looking pipe. Congrats on the score.

Good looking pipe. I like the natural finish and it has the grain to pull it off too.

Nice score! I find it odd that they would bother to stamp the "40" but nothing else. I'm sure there's a good reason though.
alsmith52

nice one

Not a clue why it is only shape stamped.

A shape stamped pipe was stamped 3 separate times. #1 was Dr. Grabow and the name. #2 was the 'ajustomatic' and patent # on the reverse. #3 was the shape #.

Every stamper was different, but the shape # was always the last stamping. Sometimes they had to find a place to put it, and it was the smallest stamp so that was easy.

The pipes had already been inspected before stamping, so the stamper was the last person to see the pipe 'up close' before it was packed. If they made a mistake..... it was shipped as if nothing was wrong with it.
We occasionally got a customer complaint about bad stamping, but very seldom.

I have an 86 that is stamped 80. Not a big mistake..  td

Thanks, Tom. Just curious; when stamping the numbers, did the stampers dial in the digits (like the old price sticker guns) or was each number a different stamp head?

Thanks Tom. It does really make me wonder now how it would have got by with just the shape stamp only. Just another one of those rarities that happened.
