Another fake Grabow

I really like Mulberry so I decided to make a pipe from it. Had problems drilling the airway. Its right at the bottom but way off center to the right. Also chamber is rough as I don't have the right kind of bit for drilling them.It will take a filter.Haven't tried to smoke it yet.

Mulberry

This is what it came out of. Stump came from the farm we used to have.
Gig

Looks great, tell us how it smokes Smile
steverino

OS, that's some of the prettiest grain I've seen anywhere.  Do let us know how it smokes.
ted

OS, Beautiful pipe. Really curious about the smoke. Your talents astound.

The grain reminds me of a trick we tried many years ago. We filled a coffee can with BB's...you know Red Rider BB's.....Then we added diluted black stain. Then we inserted a bald pipe that had a brown finish...Pulled the pipe out of the can "straight up"...Lacquered it, and had the prettiest Straight Grain pipe you ever saw. We made a hundred or so, just to see if ti was practical....Wasn't.....ted

Smoked a 1/2 bowl of CH in it this morning. Kinda tasted like burnt wood and something else I can't identify. If I can get a cake built in it might make a good smoke. Even though the airway is off center it burned right down to the bottom of the bowl with very little unburnt tobacco. That surprised me!

Doesn't surprise me it burned all the way to the bottom, Ed. despite the off center drilling.  My ex-wife once made me a pipe with two draft holes.  The first one came out all the way over on the side of the bowl.  The second was where it was supposed to be.  I never had a problem smoking all the way to the bottom.  I'd show you a picture, but when we split, I got rid of everything that reminded me of her, pipes and all.

BTW, that is quite striking grain on this pipe.

I looked at this early this morning, and now again, and I just can't get over how pretty that pipe is. You are an amazing fellow, Ed. That is some pretty work.

Thanks Gents. The grain in Mulberry is unlike any wood I've worked with. Wish I could post a full sized photo, these re-sized photos don't show the grain to well.

BEAUTIFUL PIPE AND GRAIN!!!  I love the light finish, too.  I think it will smoke fine with a little carbon or honey on the walls of the bowl.

I have never been convinced that an off-center hole meant a bad smoke.  I have a few and they smoke fine.  I am inlcined to believe, that if anything, it could impart a swirling action of the draft, thereby aiding in complete combustion.  I've never checked, but someone is bound to have patented an idea like that.  If not, well there you go, Ed!

I'll trade you a bunch of orphan pipes and some Mixture #79 for it!  --RJ--

I'll trade you..

Hadn't thought about smearing a little honey in the bowl. Have smoked a second half bowl, seems some better.
The finish is the natural color-no stain. It darkened just a shade when I waxed it.
ted

OS, I have an Applewood pipe from Mr. Ralph Gosse. I've smeared a bit of honey in it every time I've smoked it. It really works.

Perhaps you could send it to RJ or me to Pre-Smoke. Promise we'll send it back.......not.....ted

Maybe that's actually old enough to be some good stuff!  --RJ--
ted

Yes RJ, I thought the same thing. Maybe this is pre-soap....ted
steverino

Whoa!  And Cherry Brandy flavor, too!  That's got to be some good stuff...doesn't it?
ted

Believe everybody is afraid to try it. Reminds me of this....There was a little girl, who had a little curl. When she was good, she was very very good, and when she was bad she was awful.

This tobacco could be the same way.....ted
ozark southpaw

I have smoked three 1/2 bowls in this pipe. Seems to be getting better. Was gonna smear some honey in it but the little bear was empty!! Wonder how molasses would work?
ozark southpaw

Been smoking this thing like a freight train all day. Fill it to with a 1/4 of rim.  Believe it's gonna be a keeper!!

That's good news. So when are you going to start production on the ones that you might let go?

BW
ozark southpaw

Well, I really need to get some spade bits and a tenon turning tool before I "start production". If I could get the factory to sell me some stems it would be easier. The method I used to drill the chamber in this one is not exactly ideal!!

Well, I plan to make a trip to the factory around the 2nd week in September. I'm going to beg them to sell me some stems to replace a few that I have chewed up. What do you think ted, any danger in that happening?
ted

BW...Wouldn't think so. I'm "out of pocket" for several days....had a water leak at our place in Florida...but will be home whenever it's taken care of (certainly before the second week in Sept.).

Maybe it would be best if you call Rick Wooten at 336-359-5521 and explane how you are a member of "the forum" and were unable to attend the open house in July, and could you possibly get a tour in September. I think that will "git er done". I'll "push" on my end.

I'll be available whenever you come, and you and your wife (a tarheel I understand) are invited to stay with Joy and I. We have room. I'll give directions when the time draws closer.

Please remember, or remind me, that Irish Lefty needs at least 4 freehand stems. I'll buy them, but can't remember them while I'm in the factory.

I'm "tickled" that you can come, and know you both will have a great time. Steve may even want to come back up for another "dose". I know RJ does.......ted

ted...I appreciate the offer. Yes indeed, she is a tarheel! I wanted to make the trip to Sparta sooner, but a trip to Wilmington  a couple weeks ago trumped that.

I'll make a note about the stems and put it in my camera bag. I'll call Rick tomorrow.

I'm looking forward to meeting you and seeing the factory . I hope Steve can drive up too, if not I plan to stop by Lexington on our way to Pinehurst to smoke a bowl with him.

How's your tongue Ed? In a sling yet?
Noticed that you switched to a Duke...ted
ozark southpaw

Actually Ted,tongue is doing fine. This pipe smokes pretty good. Thought I'd give it a few days rest before giving it another workout. The burnt wood taste/smell is almost gone. Gonna be interesting to see how it holds up to long term smoking!
ozark southpaw

This one has come up in rotation a couple of times since my last post. The pipe continues to smoke very good but does have a problem. The stem has a tendency to seize up in the mortise after sitting for a while! I opened it up just a hair and keep the alum. tenon and mortise lubed with a #2 pencil. Be nice if the tenon was Delrin.
