Another Grabow FanHello everyone. I just acquired my first pipe and first Grabow all in one. Decided to try the pipe. The first pipe in my soon to be growing collection is a Grabow Grand Duke, and it is currently breaking it and myself in with Captain Black White. 6 bowls of the stuff so far and I am enjoying both the pipe and the tobacco. Hopefully I will be able to find some gently used Grabows in the near future, until then my collection will have to be filled with new ones and another Grabow is sure to be coming home soon. |

Welcome to the DGCF, Playboy.
Since you are just getting started with pipes, why did you select Grabow? I know most tobacconists aren't pushing DG pipes. Is it because DG is more readily available? Is it because someone endorsed DG pipes? Is it because of DG's pricing? Is it because of DG's filter system? |

Why a Grabow?The biggest deciding factor me was a good pipe at a good price made in the state where I grew up. I had an Uncle that smoked a pipe and I have fond memories of Him, my Dad, and myself fishing. I remember him saying several times that you might buy a more expensive pipe but you would be hard pressed to buy a better one. Grabows are available here in the Central Florida region, my local Tobacconist carries a few models, and Walgreens and CVS have the standard 2 pipe selection, as for the filter I am using it at the moment but do plan to try a filterless pipe as well.I grew up in Southeastern North Carolina, tobacco country, worked in the tobacco fields, barns and warehouses growing up. There was/is nothing better to me than the smell of freshly cured tobacco right out of the barn, I can remember that smell filling the air in late summer as the warehouses were loaded for sales. Something I forgot to mention in my first post, any suggestions for a nice smooth easy for a beginner tobacco would be appreciated. Tommy |

That's easy. Carter Hall, Carter Hall, and Carter Hall. I had never smoked CH until last year when Sir Duke kept praising it to High Heaven. It is imho the mildest and easiest tobacco to get you started. I cannot make it bite. Captain Black White is a fine choice, but it does seem to leave more tar residue in the pipe, and it can taste awful in a dirty wet pipe. I prefer Lane's RLP-6, which is a higher quality blend of their CBW. http://www.pipetobacco.com/page/pipet/PROD/lane/LBRLP6 So an older relative smoked DG pipes. You enjoyed memorable times with him. And that experience influenced you. BTW, Tommy, if you poke around that web site I posted selling Lane's RLP-6, you will also find some Lane pipes. Those were made at Sparta's DG factory. They aren't stamped as DG, but they essentially are non-filtered DG pipes. Guess we pipe smokers can learn: smoke your pipe around your family and friends and make a good impression on them. Not bad advice. |

I guess I'm an official collector now, today I spotted a very nice looking smooth polished Grand Duke in a local CVS and I just could not leave the store without it. |

Well if it is south of there we may have bumped into each other. I try to get to Beech or Sugar Mountain at least once a year, although living in Florida has lessened my desire to play in the snow as much as I used to. | ||

Playboy...I went to Lees-McRae college the year Beech was opened. Took skiing and still love it today. However, I "winter" in Crystal River FL, and don't miss the cold.
Can sit on my deck in NC and see Beech and Sugar mountains.... Not bad duty....ted |

Although this winter has been a bit of an exception, I'll take the winters down here any day of the week. You had some snow to look at up there in the northwest end of the state, all we had was gray skies bare trees and brown grass. I prefer to ski Sugar but if I have to go during the weekends I generally ski Beech, it crowds and clogs up early on Sugar during the weekends. Well one of these days maybe I can stop by there sometime, burn a bowl of baccer in something with at least a spade on the stem and enjoy that view. In return we could sit on the back of my boat and enjoy a view of the St. John's River lazily rolling buy and burn another bowl as long as you promise to leave the binoculars alone while you smoke the pipe.

Welcome PB from another NC native. Glad you are enjoying your Grabows. As for tobaccos, I had never tried Half and Half until one of the fellows here sent me some. It is quite a good tobacco and should be a good one for you to try. | ||

Thanks for the welcome Steve!! I had a guy come up to me the other day when he saw me smoking my pipe, he gave me the same advice on Half and Half. | ||
