Bent Viking

Here's is a sweet unsmoked Dr Grabow Viking that I bought from Joe.  It's a great looking pipe and the bowl has some awesome grain!   I've been wanting to try smoking a metal pipe  and this is perfect because I love bent pipes.   Having never smoked a metal pipe before,  does anyone have experiences with these? Someone once told me that you have to smoke these slowly,  or the metal will really heat up.  A friend of mine actually burned his bare leg by setting it down on it.   I imagine it's like any other pipe,  just  smoke slowly.
I'll let you know how I do on the first smoke.
Thanks for the deal on a nice pipe  Joe!   👍👍👍

I haven't had one heat up too much until right at the bottom of the bowl, and never enough to burn me. Like you said just smoke it like normal, and you'll be good Gary.

Thanks Tim!  That was kinda my thoughts too!    I appreciate that!  I'm looking forward to trying it out!

Fine grain there indeed!

I've never had any Smoking Metals pipe (and there a lot of them out there still) do that.  Course I dont smoke aromatics, and pretty much have always smoked slowly.

Thanks!   I'll have to watch myself,  because I smoke mostly aromatics,  and sometimes tend to smoke faster.  I think this will be a relaxing pipe  and not a driving pipe!   Laughing  When someone cuts me off or in heavy traffic,  I smoke quicker!  Lol!

Like you, Gary, I just joined the Smoking Metal Club with a Falcon that I restored recently. I haven't treated the pipe any differently than I would a briar and I don't really notice any heat issues. Like Tim said, the frame gets a little hot under the bowl when the ember starts getting close the metal in the center, but nothing extreme. I'd have to do some mad puffing to get it hot enough to burn myself.

I gotta say that I'm kind of loving this Falcon so far. Clean up is a breeze. I hope you enjoy that Viking just as much. That's a good looking pipe you have there.

I didn't like them at first but I gave them a chance and rather enjoy them now... Viking, Falcon, Kirsten Occasionally, I wrap a cleaner around my finger (one wrap) and clip it, then drop the ring into the chamber under the bowl. Saw it as a product for sale and thought, "I can make that a whole lot cheaper". Laughing

Here's a pic of one sold on Amazon.

The late Professor Frederick Kirsten who invented the Kirstem metal system pipe once said something like, "If the pipe gets hot, you're simply smoking too fast!" That about sums it up ...

Thanks Michael!  It is pretty cool!  I'm smoking it right now, and so far so good.
I've heard that term used for these pipes before,  but what does that mean, "Pacer"?

Gary, most of the bent Viking's were called Pacer's. I think I've seen a few with Pacer on them, but I could be wrong.

I got my a Kristen but to be honest im not that thrilled with it . I dont like the straight down airway on a bowl . I like the side draft of a regular pipe better. To me they smoke better.
