Commodore 84L, odd stemI just acquired this Commodore 84L and the stem appears different than any other 84 or 84L I have seen. I would be interested if Ted or anyone knows why this one is different.
Here's the pipe:
Here's a closeup of the stem:
Here's a comparison of the Commodore 84L stem to the Viscount 84 stem:
Thanks in advance for any comments.

Steve, that stem has been shortened and a new button cut. And done rather crudely! Probably had the snot chewed out of it and had holes or a piece broke out.

OS has it right. Previous owner might want to sharpen his knife and dull his teeth.....ted

Of course, I should have realized that. You live and learn. Oh well, if anyone runs across a stem for an 84L, I'll trade some Mixture 79 for it.

Have been thinking of myself as a Commodore collector as of late. And noticed this one up for bids. Thought the bit looked strange.

Well, you were right, jj. The stem was really what intrigued me enough to bid on it - overall the pipe didn't look that great in the auction picture. However, turns out it looks pretty good "in the flesh". I sort of collect Commodores too, maybe have half a dozen or so. Don't see nearly as many of these as some of the others.

Steve, saw a rustic (Viscount, Starfire or Westbrook) 84L on ebay a few minutes ago. The bit didn't look all that "spiffy", but looked intact. If I remember right, it was cheap....ted
