Hello Neil, welcome to the DGCF. Is that pipe stamped with Dr. Grabow?, any shape numbers?
Can you post another pic showing a side view?

You are the owner (and should be amply proud at that) of a truly RARE Dr. Grabow! TED knows the production figures better, but I think I can honestly and justifiably say "RARE" (a much abused term, to be sure, particularly on eBay). I have seen only four or five in eBay auctions -- all near the same time -- but that was several years ago. I have not seen a single one since. I failed to bid on several and did not bid nearly high enough on another, but back then I thought they were just another line of Dr. Grabows and plenty more would come along. THEY HAVEN'T.
There are probably some other pictures of Dr. Grabow UNIQUEs in the Forum Gallery, as they HAVE BEEN discussed before and I have posted some photos of them. I don't know if they were ever assigned shape numbers but I would guess not as each one I have seen has been, well, for lack of a better term, UNIQUE!
Nice pipe, Neil! Now that I have told you how rare they are, DO YOU WANT TO PART WITH ONE OF THEM?! --RJ--

I just returned from the Gallery where I was going to look for my previous pictures of Uniques, and came back to this topic to mention that the pipes are shown there -- no wonder! Nevermind . . . --RJ--
(I looked for awhile and only found the photo of a new one in the plastic case it came in. I never have mastered how to get the photos I find in a new message without just uploading the photo again, but maybe this link will take one to the photo:

Unique indeed! RJ what era do these come from? I've not seen anything like this on the charts.
Ed, we may have to pass over Texas for a trip to SW Ohio.

Well, TED knows that better than I. I did get to looking around the DGCF, though, and DID find where we discussed these fine pipes before. As we tend to ramble and stuff (me in particular), oddly enough it was found under the "Introductions" header and resulted from a discussion about Frenchy's UNIQUE he had. I had changed the subject line to Re: Dr. Grabow UNIQUE.
Well, let's go ahead and do the subject justice! I was wrong -- the ONLY photo I had posted was of the one in the display box. So below, for ready reference and so everyone won't have to search the forum, I present part of the original thread from quite awhile back:
| LokoMac8 wrote: | | Sir Duke wrote: | Mind if I post the pics of your Freehand?
That is a Rockin' pipe, I don't care who made it Grabow or Gretta Garbo, that pipe is kickin' !!! |
I have tried to buy one of these several times on eBay, but always got outbid. Now I haven't seen one in quite a while!
My friend, an employee at Dr. Grabow, seen the picture you posted of Frenchy's fine pipe and told me, " . . . Grabow Unique. One of your croneys has one although I don't think he realizes it." He said in 1966 they only had 18 of them left. He also added that the top of the Grabow line was $7.50. Unique was $35.00. He continued, "Unique was the first effort by a US manufacturer to make a freehand."
I don't remember what the UNIQUEs I bid on went for in the end, probably not very much but I sort of had the idea back then that if I paid over ten to fifteen dollars for an old pipe, it was too much! At any rate, I am sort of hesitant to put this info about how rare they are in the Forum as I still don't have one and this single post may spark a bidding frenzy on the next one that appears, but alas, DUTY comes before my personal pleasure and gain. I started out passing the word about Dr. Grabow pipes and sharing information, and save for a CURRENT auction or deal I am working on, I'm going to continue to post what I know for others to enjoy.
By the way, Frenchy, of the three or four UNIQUEs that I have seen, yours is by far the best looking of them! I've got about 400 Dr. Grabows and I don't have a UNIQUE -- what kind of collector am I? |
So I guess we can date them to about the mid-1960s. Now, I'll include pics of some of those other Dr. Grabow UNIQUEs -- at least I had the foresight to copy the auction photos!
And there you have it! The last photo is of one owned by DGCF member "Frenchy". That photo was also already posted on this Forum, but to save time in going and hunting it, I risked storage space by going ahead and uploading it again here. --RJ--

Probably would not do us any good as by now I'm sure he has them in a secure location since finding out that they are quite rare!!
Actually I saw these pipes a couple of days ago. I bought a Grabow from Neil on Ebay. In our emails he mentioned these pipes and then sent me photos. Of COURSE I was immediately interested! I thought they might be part of the "Luther Marlowe Blue Ridge" series but could not find any like these in the PDF of that catolog,so I steered Neil toward the forum, after asking what he wanted for them!

Neil, I worked for Grabow from 1966 till 1991 and I'm almost positive that I sold 2 of the pipes you have shown. They were only sold to customers that walked into the factory and that would have been 40 years ago so you see how "special" they were to me then. I can add some information to their history, but one question if you would.......Where did you get them? I don't need names, just the where's and wherefores.
They are a part of my past and even though I don't want one they are like seeing 2 lost children. Thanks for the pictures and the memories...ted

Very interesting pipe's! I'll forget I saw them-for the sake of Mac being able to someday add a few to his racks.
