Early H&LT Dr. Grabow Filter Pipe

The line of FILTER DELUXE Dr. Grabow pipes has been a mystery to me for some time.  They have a SPADE on the TOP of the stem like Linkman's Chicago made Grabows, however, the Spade is POINTED TOWARD THE BOWL RATHER THAN THE SMOKER.  These FILTER DELUXE pipes have the same overall look of the Dr. Grabow STANDARD Ajustomatic pipes also being made by HL&T.  The pipe in the photo is an HL&T #49 shape.

I never was quite sure about the filter medium, etc. in these pipes until I recently acquired an old, old box of filters.  Mystery solved!

This box of filters has the HL&T name and Greensboro address and the filters are shorter and a little larger in diameter than the Medico type filter used on the later model DUKEs and OMEGAs, as can be seen in the attached photo.  The filter is cellophane wrapped, but the filter medium is solid, more like a cigarette filter.

I now know a bit more about these pipes, but still some questions remain.  I don't know how long these were made, but it was probably a very short span of time before they introduced the DUKE lines.  I have yet to turn up this FILTER DELUXE in any ads, or in any printed matter.  --RJ--

It may be a cigarette filter. I imagine they were available and cheap.

Push stem.  I got rushed as I was called to work, so I didn't get to include other photos I wanted to attach last night.  Here is an exploded view.  The metal part on the right is supposed to be permenantly mounted in the stem.  The metal "cap" with holes forms a container or enclosure for the filter.  I had been just using unsented toilet paper, kleenex or paper towel bits and it has been working fantastic -- change it after EVERY bowl and it's very cheap!  I will now try one of the only six filters I have for this model of filter pipe.

Below is another view of the box and filters:

Ed, I think I have only seen three FILTER DELUXE pipes on eBay in several years time.  I LIKE THEM, so bid high when I find them.  It'd take more than a little DUKE and a almost full bag of Mixture 79 to get me to part with one -- like maybe the nude lady Grabow I know some person has!  --RJ--

Nay! Nay I say!! The "Lady Grabow " and I are as one!! To part with her would be the death of me ! Nay!--- I ain't even smoked her once!! I fear the passions that may be invoked!! How about two Larks, one of which I have "customized", a bag of Walgreens BEST vanilla and the Mixture 79?? Just in case I'll be watching on Ebag for one of these!!!

I can understand your passion for the naked lady Grabow.  And I surely would not want to be the cause of the death of anyone, directly or indirectly.

If you find one of these FILTER DELUXE pipes in an auction you want to bid on, let me know so that I will not bid against you.  I have quite a passion for those, so don;t plan on letting very many of them go "no bid"!  --RJ--

In recurrently comes to me that we should have been friends way back in 1966 -- what a team we would have made!  Of course, I would have only been nine years old then and my parents would probably frown on me smoking a pipe, though I very distinctly remember my Dad's boss smoking a Viking loaded with cherry tobacco on numerous occasions.  One of those early childhood influences, though my Mom hated his "stinky old pipe", which I never really understood how she could have smelled anything over those Parliament cigarettes that BOTH of my parents were smoking.

Actually, my awareness and ultimately, my passion, for Dr. Grabow pipes did not begin until the early 1970s, YEARS before I would actually smoke a pipe.  Those old Dr. Grabow ads DID WORK ON ME, albeit about eight years after they were published!  The Dr. Grabow name stuck in my mind and I never forgot it.  --RJ--

I just acquired my second FILTER DELUXE pipe.  This one seems to be a HL&T #12 shape and is constructed about the same as my first one.  (It is missing the "cap" to the filter compartment, but interestingly enough, did include one of the old original filters in it, in slightly used condition.)  What I didn't include in my earlier info was the stamping on the right side of the pipe.

#49 shape had this:
       IMPORTED BRIAR
       PAT. PENDING

#12 shape has this in slanted text, which I haven't seen on any other Dr. Grabow:
       BENCH MADE
       IMPORTED BRIAR

I found the "Bench Made" to be interesting to say the least.  TED, while you were digging around in your desk drawer and finding the old ROYALTON stamp that caused the HL&T logo to live on for years, did you ever see or hear of this "Bench Made" stamping?  Was it something that was short lived and may have come from one of the other pipe companies HL&T took over?  --RJ--

Mac, In fact I do remember "bench made", but cannot recall that stamp being used after 1966. During the 10 years that I worked at Mastercraft I had many occasions to look through all the stamps (both M/C and Grabow).

M/C sold many "private label" pipes and we were always looking for a new name to sell.

For some reason, in my feeble brain, I associate "bench made" with "union made".

Best I can do.....today.....ted
