Some guy in Waco (Mac's neighborhood) sold a bunch of unopened vintage tins on eBay a while back.
I've seen info indicating the current Edgeworth isn't the old Edgeworth.

Can't say since I've never smoked it. It is an old brand name. Used to be made by Larus (or by Pinkerton for Larus), and now by Lane.
It still receives good reviews at tobaccoreviews.com

I'm planning on stopping at JR a week from tomorrow when I bring my son home from school. I'll see if they have any Edgeworth in stock and pick up some if they do. Wouldn't mind trying it myself and then if anyone else wants some I can pass it on for a phenominal fee.

OS, try some Edgeworth Slices, if you can find it anymore. I always liked it better than the ready-rubbed. 5 Brothers used to be made by the Larus & Brother Company in Richmond. However, that was many, many years ago. I don't know if it's still available in the States.

Okay Fellas, need some advice - I stopped at JR last week as I mentioned previously in this thread. The only thing they had in Edgeworth was the large tin. I'm sure this is not the slices, but do you think it is worth trying? If so, I'll get the tin next time and send out some samples if anyone is interested.
Thanks.

I posted a general question on Smokers Forums about Edgeworth and most of the replies I got over there seemed to indicate that I'd better get back over to JR and buy all I can while I can. Anyone have thoughts on why this would be the case? What don't I know about Edgeworth?

Edgeworth brand was "adopted" by Lane Ltd. from Larus. I've read some speculation re Lane's long term strategy in the declining tobacco market. Let's just say Lane does not feel as emotionally attached to Edgeworth.
We can be grateful to Jim Burns for securing DG's future for the present.

Okay Fellas, I picked up a tin of Edgeworth Ready Rubbed today. Just went out and tried a bowlful in my Eldorado 84 (Canadian). I don't want to appear like I'm overdoing it or anything, but MAN IS THAT STUFF GOOD!
Now that I've calmed down, here's the real story! It is a very interesting tobacco. When I popped the top, I got a strong tin aroma which smelled distinctly of stewed fruit. I have smelled a tobacco like this before but I can't remember what it was. The cut looks mostly like cube-cut, with a small percentage of pieces that look like ribbon that was cut up fine. The cut causes it to pack in the pipe effortlessly - really - you almost don't have to pack it, just fill the bowl. It lit up on the first light with no problem. The taste was really nice - sort of a sweetened (but not cloying) Prince Albert maybe. This taste lasted through the first half of the bowl. After this, the taste became a little less sweet and the nicotine started to kick in. It's not super strong by any means, but I did feel a bit of throat irritation from it.
As for composition, the tin mentions only Kentucky Burley and Tennesse White Burley. From what I have read elsewhere, it also contains some Virginia and boys, if I was a swearing man, I'd swear it has perique in it. It was downright spicy through about the second third of the bowl.
If you've wanted to try Edgeworth and you like Prince Albert or any of the other similar burleys, I wouldn't hesitate to go ahead and order a tin. I don't believe you'll be sorry. I'm so confident, in fact, that I'll make this offer: If you buy a tin and don't like it, let me know and I'll buy it from you.
I had said I would send out some samples. If anyone is interested, PM me your address.

DRB - Have you checked the JRcigars web page? I think you can still order it online right now. If not, I will be glad to try to get another tin and ship it to you. There was at least one more tin in the store, so I imagine there may still be some left.
Through a fellow member of another forum, I have found out that Edgeworth Slices, at least, is still available from european suppliers. It can be had for approx. $21 per tin plus shipping. I would imagine the ready rubbed is available the same way but he didn't say. It might be worthwhile to see if anyone is interested in a group buy to try and get a quantity price and a better shipping cost.

Use of Edgeworth was prominently advertised in Linkman's DG ads. Makes me believe there was a meeting of minds between them.

EDGEWORTH Tobacco -- a sad, sad day | drbridges wrote: | Steverino, thanks, but I want my own tin.
Did they have more Edgeworth? I'll pay 2X what it costs. |
Any self-respecting Dr. Grabow fan should at least TRY EDGEWORTH -- for years it is what Linkman used to pre-smoke his pipes with!
I've been smoking EDGEWORTH for awhile and it remains one of my staples. I just buy the 14oz cans from Lil' Brown Smoke Shack. They give me excellent service and their prices are fair -- actually considerably cheaper than most of the prices for stuff that I can find locally. I bought some about two months ago and it was about twenty bucks, I think.
Unfotunately, I JUST checked out the web site and found this:
"Edgeworth
There are no products to list in this category."
This is sad news for me! I have been hearing the rumors about EDGEWORTH being discontinued, but didn't think much about it as I had been buying all I wanted whenever I needed it from LBSS. All I can say is if you can buy it locally or whatever, BUY ALL YOU CAN. Even if you don't like it, folks that do may pay an arm and a leg for it a few years down the road and you will have something good to sell or trade.
I tried buying some from that fellow from Waco that ssold the old tins on eBay, but all I did was run up the price and still GOT OUTBID! That fellow ought to be RICH by now!
I am attaching below two pages from an old 1937 Larus & Bro. Brochure that came in a postal mailing box with two old Dr. Grabow pipes I have -- the pipes were like new when I got them, the sort of find that I live for! --RJ--

Definite meeting of the minds. I mentioned before that I have two Dr. Grabow pipes that were mailed in a box FROM Larus & Bro., along with that pamphlet on pipe smoking and Edgeworth tobacco. Even in those days, there seemed to have been some sort of promotional thing going on somewhat akin to the RJR/Grabow offers. It may take finding an old newspaper advertisement to figure out the full story on that. --RJ--

Edgeworth Ready-Rubbed produced by Lane Ltd. of Tucker, GA.
Not a blend, but a true bright burley experience, without any casing or additives I could detect. It isn't a ribbon cut, or a cube cut, but a tangle of short ribbons you expect from rubbing sliced cake tobacco.
It has all of the "nose" I've come to expect from burley. Made my eyes water. Burned slowly and evenly to a fine gray ash. A true tobacco without the fruit and candy.
We can be thankful to Captain Slade and his slave Stephen for the accidental discovery of bright leaf burley.
I'm sorry Lane is not continuing this blend.

Dr.B....This pipe tobacco place site brings up a lot more questions than answers...Best I can tell, the SWR, and Lane shapes are Grabow's.
The Viking Pacer by Mastercraft IS a Viking. I believe the Dr. Grabow name was moulded onto the bottom of the metal base. Be really interested to know if it says Grabow, or if that has been sanded off...Regardless, call a spade a spade.
If IP&A has bases, the wood was always "no value" because of its size. Really a tremendous profit in these.....ted

I spoke with Jim about this because there was an eBay seller out of England who was selling what he described as NEW Vikings.
Jim said they still had a large quantity of Viking bases and bits in storage, and that in 2006 he had assembled some for sale to a dealer who moved most of them to Great Britain where metal stem pipes are more popular.
He also said a problem with resurrecting the Viking was nickle plating. Environmental law has nearly ended nickle plating in this country, and Viking stems might have to come from Asia. He couldn't commit to that unless he was confident there was a market for Vikings.

I think that's probably right. Lane knew they were selling the factory and so they made and took some finished inventory for themselves. Just now coming on the market. Might also explane the ones Steverino found on e-bay. Remember..Un-smoked...Made by a famous factory in NC...
The VIKING in full shapes troubles me. Why let the trademark lapse if you (Mr. Burns) were ever going to make them again? I imagine he made up all the Viking (metal) he could, sold them to England, and said "no mas"......ted
