First Omega

Hi folks,

I was gifted my frst Dr Grabow Omega by Tranders and its a great smoker, thankyou mate. I've been smoking Amphora Full Aroma in it and both smoke well together. The only thing is I would prefer the stem of the pipe to be bent more as I believe it will sit more comfortably than as is but I will smoke it a little/lot more before I decide. I can highly recommend these pipes but I know I'm already preaching to the converted Smile

I agree the OMEGA is one of DG's best. I like the #37 shape. The taper stem joint is one of the simplest, yet most durable, stem joints available. The well pipe design smokes great, and adding a filter just makes it better, IMO. I object to the original mouthpiece and modify mine (as described previously here in the DGCF), but otherwise the OMEGA is a favorite here.

DG Bent Shapes

I think DG tends to leave all of their bent shapes a little too straight, whether it is the #37, #37L, #67, or #47. This might be because DG pipes have to fit within a plastic package with set dimensions.

If you are going to modify the bend of the stem, you probably should insert a pipe cleaner through the stem to keep the stem's airway open after bending. I've never had one kink and pinch off, but imagine it could happen.

Gig...absolutely, insert a cleaner. Now, in a pan of boiling water, insert the stem.
Normal cautions........Leave for 15 to 20 seconds.....Take out.....wearing gloves.....Try to bend SLIGHTLY. If it won't move....heat again for another 15 to 20 seconds. You should be able to move it enough to make it comfortable. Repeat till malliable. When the bend is to suit you, dunk in COLD water.

ABS is a tough plastic to work with. Patience will pay off.....ted

I bent my stem on my Omega just like my Peterson 314's and now it's perfect. Here is a photograph, a poor one at that but you'll get the idea Smile

And thanks to you, I just enjoyed a nice smoke in an OMEGA #37 smooth finish that you gifted to me with the purple stain removed and the wonderfully modified bit.  I am not a big filter pipe fan, but this is among the best of 'em and I think of you and your generosity each time I smoke it!  --RJ--

Glad your "new" pipe smokes well for you. I got an Omega awhile back-and killed it.I had no draw so I figured I clear it out with a drill bit.DOOH! Got a plan to fix it but It's for display purposes only at the moment!

Gig....How did you bend it? You evidently found a method that works well. I have a Savoy #67 that needs the same treatment. Thanks..ted..

Is the stem in your Omega ABS or vulcanite Gig?

OS, I don't believe we ever made the Omega with anything except ABS. Could be wrong, but don't remember it.....ted

Just used a candle to heat the stem which had a pipe cleaner inserted through it. Keep the stem moving over the heat, rotating it as you go otherwise your stem will blister, thats the secret and then bend to suit when pliable. It doesn't take long at all then tip the stem in water to cool and set to shape.

That's the way I do it also. Have found that ABS stems are more prone to blistering than the vulcanite.

I'm bidding on my second Omega hopefully on Ebay but this time in a rusticated finish. They are awesome smokers Smile

If it included free shipping. I think you may have just out bid me. On my attempt to get my first. No problem tho. I'll get one eventually.

Nope, mine is not free shipping.

I nearly always have a DG Omega in my pipe rotation. I think they're awesome also.

Omega pipes with their military push bit stem are the "cat's meow" of the Dr. Grabow line if you ask me, they are all I smoke anymore. I gifted away my other DG pipes to friends and a couple of newbie’s at the local pipe shop.
Gig

Agree, they are great smoking pipes and once the stem is bent a little more to my liking then they are on the par in smoking quality with my Cavicchi and Ardor pipes. Unfortunately I have been outbd on my rusticated Omenga I was after. Oh welll hopefully another will come up on ebay in good condition Smile

Hey Gig, better luck next time on your bidding. I am not talented enough to bend stems properly, have tried before and failed miserably. It is easier for me to just adapt to a new pipe. LOL

I used this method on the Savoy. Worked like a charm. Took 3 heatings of about 15 secomds each, and then a dip in cold water. Think I like this better than the candle because I didn't risk blistering the stem.......ted
