Four more pipes

Well, hadn't posted a picture in a while, so here are four pipes I recently got in.  From the top:

A DeLuxe bent squat bulldog, shape 9779;

A Starfire poker, shape 85 from the Collector's Series;

A Starfire "pickaxe", shape 39 from the Continental Series;

An Eldorado large bulldog, red stain finish, shape 61.

I've started trying to be a little more selective in what I buy, opting for pipes that are already pretty clean (the best I can tell from pictures and descriptions).  These four are pretty nice.

Thanks guys, yeah, I thought that little bent jobbie was cute too.  I think that's the first DeLuxe I've had.

That Starfire poker is identical to a Berwyck I have. Wonder if I can change the name on my pipe and make it a Starfire?

OS, from some of the stuff I've seen you do, I'd say, "Yes".

OS...I gotta' agree with Steve. You could make a Starfire out of a "rock" and a "hemlock".

Great pipes Steve....ted

The 9779 is an interesting pipe -- seems to be an early version of what Dr. Grabow would later call "sportsman" models.  The best I can tell, it was one of those post-1949 "new shapes" that the old magazine ads touted.  There were SEVERAL of these short, fat models introduced around that time.  I have yet to find a shape chart that shows them, so I photograph them and add them to a "Master Shape" chart project that I have been working on for some time.  If anyone stumbles across a "new" or unusual shape, I hope they will run it by the DGCF so that we can record it.  --RJ--

That's interesting, RJ.  I've been watching quite a few auctions for the old pipes lately, but most of them seem to be going for a little more than I like to spend.  They seem to be getting popular.
