Gig, where do you live?I ask, because, in my prodigal youth, I spent seven memorable days, and nights, in Freemantle/Perth, WA, courtesy of the United States Navy. Met a young lady named Robyn in downtown Perth about two hours after I got off the ship, and.....well, suffice it to say, Australian women occupy a special niche in my memory. Couldn't spend a dollar if I wanted to once the Cobbers heard my accent (especially the older ones), not for a beer, or a meal. Got my a** kicked throwing darts because I thought I knew how to play 301/501. All in all, a very enjoyable time, second only to the Philippines for liberty. I have very fond memories of OZ.

I live in the state of New South Wales in Australias biggest inland county town called Wagga Wagga. Its 5 hrs from Sydney (travelling North) and the same to Melbourne (going South).

That puts you on the other side of the continent from Perth, then. Until I looked at the map, I'd almost forgotten how large Australia really is. It's like asking John Smith from New York if he knows John Smith from Los Angeles. BTW, the only downside to my visit was that it was in July; the weather was terrible.

I never made to Australia,but I can second that statement about the Phillipines!! Wish I had a dollar for every bottle of San Miguel(sp) beer that I drank there!

San Miguel, wonderful stuff, lousy quality control. Some days you could drink gallons and never get even a slight buzz. Other days, two beers would put my a** under the table. OS, did you ever make it to Pusan, Korea? Oscar is another good one.

If I remember correctly you had to watch out for the SM in the green bottles,was bad to give you the back door trots!! Never made to Korea. Spent a very nice week in Taiwann once and hit Singapore and Bangkok a couple of times but Subic was almost like a home port!!

OS, made Singapore twice, once on the way to the IO and once on the way out. Didn't like it the first time, absolutely hated it the second. Don't know why, exactly, too many prudes, I guess. Also, we were supposed to hit Pattya (sp?) Beach, Thailand on the way out, but, for some reason, CINCPAC canceled our visit.

I have always wanted to go to Australia. Would like to climb that big rock and sit and smoke a bowl! among other things. New Zealand too!. Once when in the navy,some buddies and I met up with some Aussie sailors in a Hong Kong bar. As you said Terry,you're money is no good when in their company!! They bought ALL the beer and drank us all under the table!!

Glad you had a great experience with Australian Defence Force Personnel ( 15 years in the Royal Australian Airforce as a Flt Sgt Aircraft Mech Technician)
