Grabow Factory stem replacement service

This is not meant to show off a refurb, but to showcase the excellent service Grabow still currently provides.  That said, I think this is the place to do this.

I received these pipes along with others with stems in horrible condition, as you can see by the detached examples:

Grabow took my bowls, fitted them perfectly with the stems you're looking at, provided brand new stingers, and then even buffed up the bowls pretty nicely.  They actually polished the faded band on this little Starfire!

They provide this re-stem service for $10 per pipe. While you know I'm up for the challenge of fixing bitten stems, the chunks missing from these and a few others made it a pretty easy choice for me to give Grabow the opportunity and the business.  Since they do only the white spades these days, all that's left to do is hit my local CVS and ask if Sally Hansen offers nail polish in "Grabow Westbrook Orange".  Laughing

Here's where to call and send'em:

Thanks Joe, I didn't realize that service was so readily available.

Thanks for the information Joe!  I've passed up several Dr. G's in the past, because the stems were in such bad condition.  I guess I won't be doing that any more.

Grand indeed!

That service will cost your $25-$40 anywhere else. DG at $10 is fully supporting their old products even though the current owner had nothing to do with them. For that they are to be commended. Great Work! Dave

Joe,are the replacement stems rubber or ABS ?
JoeMan

That's a good question.  I'm not sure I'm expert enough on stem material to know the difference on these new ones.  Suggestion?

Very true.  In the past, I've paid other pipemakers $20 to $25 for replacement stems.  Thanks Dr. G!

Standard shapes are ABS. Fancy shapes are still Vulcanite... ted

Thanks Ted.
Joe the easiest way to tell ABS from vulcanite,if the vulcanite isn't oxidized, is to look at the slot in the end of the stem. ABS usually have a more square opening. The rubber stems have a wider  slot. ABS stems  usually have a thicker button and lip area. There is also some differences in shape especially with the straight tapered fish tails. The taper is different and starts further back from the face of the stem.
JoeMan

All of these new stems have a pretty wide opening (side to side), and the 4 corners of the opening are squared off on each.  I'll post a picture in a bit.

Here they are...

ted

IMHO... The stem for the #42 and the #84 are vulcanite. Others are ABS.. Maybe a little insight Razz .. ted
Sean

Now look what you made me do... I just pulled all of my Grabows and took a closer look at them. Sure enough, most of the slots are about 3/8" and a couple are about 3/16" and squared off at the edges. I never noticed that before. Thanks for edifying us on that.

Does ABS sand and buff the same as vulcanite? I haven't noticed a difference while buffing them but then again, I wasn't looking for a difference cause I thought they were just different grades of vulcanite. Embarassed

Well, from what I see they look like Vulcanite. It's good to know they still have some vulcanite stems. I have a few I'd like to send in and would prefer vulcanite.
Sean, the only thing I do differently with the ABS is us a lighter touch at the buffing wheel. They melt easier-and quicker!
JoeMan

I'm thinking that those of us buffing with dremel may not notice quite as much.

What all do you need to do when you send in your bowls?  Do you need to write an explanation of what all you want done?  Do you need to pay return postage, etc?  Or do you just toss your bowls into a box and hand them over?  I have about 20 stemless bowls that are in excellent shape and just need stems.  I'd like to send them all in at one and add a buttload more pipes to my rotation.
JoeMan

Call the number (top of this thread), speak with Debbie and she'll let you know how to handle the return postage.  You'll be happy with every single pipe they stem for you!

Gotta give the factory a SHOUT.

I took a Starfire #84 and a Golden Duke #19 to be repaired..
Not only did they re-stem them, but gave me an extra stem pre sanded and finished for each..

What a place........... ted

PA,    send them here. I'll take your "wants" to the factory.. $10.00..Maybe$9.00 ea, and I'll get 'em all fixed......... ted

Thank you, Ted.  PM sent.
JoeMan

Ted...do you think they'll pop a spade into an unmarked stem?  You'll recall I showed you the unstamped DG #25 I have; would love to get the trademark added if they're willing.

If they'll do it, no rush, no special trip needed...maybe sometime soon when you're already heading to Sparta.

Well after reading this, I guess I no longer have an excuse to neglect a box of Grabow's sitting on the floor. Time to resurect them and bring them back to smoking life.

Very Happy

Let me re-emphasize...they do a really nice job...fit very custom to each pipe, made just for it.  Each one very much worth the 10 bucks.
