Grabow Wanted

Hey everyone maybe someone can help me.  I've been to 5 places looking at Grabows and they all just have the small bowled pipes.  I want one like the top Grabow in this picture.  It's  Grand Duke I bought last year.  Has anyone seen any anywhere?

Sorry, couldn't get to the picture. Bet RJ'll have one. He has 2 of everything.

Post the picture again, and I'll get one from the factory, if it's still available, provided you can't find it elsewhere....ted

Try this, Ted:

I don't have one, but it sure looks good.

Thanks Terry....Yes, I can probably get a #36 Grand Duke at the factory.

GW, if you can't find one here, just let me know, and I'll pick one up for you. I'm in Sparta about a day a week.....ted

Ted,

Thanks.  It doesn't have to be a Grand Duke.  Anything in that shape and size I'd be happy with.  Could I paypal you or send your cash?

Gilly

Gilly....I'll send you a bill......Please send me a PM with the usual necessary post office information. I'm going to Sparta tomorrow.

I'll check Halsey Drug first. They might be a bit cheaper.....Glad to do it......ted

Well, I thought we were talking about something along the BIG PIPE scale in looking at the picture and reading what was wanted.  Unless your TED, it's hard to tell the size of the pipe in pictures, or for that matter, even in the shape charts because the drawings aren't always exactly to scale in relation from one pipe to another.  The charts, for the most part, make the smaller pipes look as big, and sometimes BIGGER than the small ones!

Actually, I only have ONE actual #36 and it's the one I lost and found again and is badly weatherbeaten.  Reminded me that one of my next projects is to send OS a bunch of pipes and let him work his magic on my #36 for me in return.  I haven't forgotten, Ed!  Just need to get a good block of time to take care of it.

Anyway, TED has indentified the pipe and is working to solve the need.  Excellent!  I bet there are some pipes in those cases at the factory Gilly'd love to have, too!  --RJ--
ted

Gilly, If someone has one, I'll let you decide. You may get a better offer from OS, or RJ.

I'll check the forum tomorrow. If you haven't had any luck  by then, I'll pull the trigger. I'll buy one that I like....just in case I get to smoke it.....ted

Well, if it's a NEW Grabow, you'll HAVE to smoke it first just so that it will be properly "Pre-Smoked" in the old Grabow manner.  Of course, I can see a "value-added" charge tacked on for that very specialized service . . .  --RJ--

not to rain on anyone's parade, but there is this Royal Duke available at WVSmokeshope.com. Looks to be the same shape and size, except it has a saddle bit. correct me if I'm wrong.....know you will

You told me the story....remember the Bull......If anyone deserves a new #36, it's you. If I get a bargain I may buy 3. You, me, and Gilly makes 3.

BW, I can only tell sizes accurately by having something to compare to.

This one looks like a #50s. But it could be #72s, #36s, #69s, or even #52s.

Sorry, I just can't get over it. I'm devoted to Grabow...ted

Did you notice it is labeled "Royal Duke (D)". Allthe pipes on this site have a letter designation. Anyone have a chart of that?   ...I like that pipe, I just might get me one.

BW.. I looked a bit closer at the Grabow's on this site and don't have a clue as to the letter designation. There were 2 bents that were the same size, same brand, and had 2 different letter designations....Duh!!!...ted

Wow, this place is great.  You guys are really helpful here.  Does anyone have a Dr. Grabow chart?  I'm sure I could point it out.

The reason I bought this Grand Duke was because it was the same shape as a Silver Duke my father had in his collection. It's not the really big Grabows, more of a standard straight billiard.

Must be the #36 like TED said, then -- LARGE billiard.

That it?  Don't really have a scan of a whole chart that is both big enough to see and small enough to post.  --RJ--

Here are the basic shapes as they existed on a retail sales type pamphlet circa 1960 that is basic enough to include in just two pictures.  In later years the shapes were expanded upon.  --RJ--

Hmm.  Looks like a 36 to me.

I can't help you out with a 36 or anything else right now!! A certain person has bought everything I had for sale and got me digging through my junkers to satisfy his hunger for old Grabows!! Which I very much appreciate!
ted

So now it a #36 for Gilly, me, RJ, BW, and OS....Bet we can get a discount for as dozen...or a gross......

Only kidding.....ted
gillywalker

So do you guys think it was rare for me to find the #36 Grand Duke at the grocery store here last year?
ozark southpaw

Went to the place were I buy my OTC tobacco's the other day. They have finally gotten some Grabows there. Most of them were small pipes. No 36's. Did have a Golden Duke and a Royalton I really liked but I spent all my money on tobacco and filters!

Gilly, I guess it is more rare than I thought. Halsey Drug only had 1 #36 out of about 60 pipes and it had a large dark spot on it. The Grabow showroom only had 2 out of about 200.

RJ's friend Robert Roten fixed us up. I got a Royal Duke for you because the finish on the Grand Duke looked awful. You'll like this one. I'll get it in the mail this afternoon.

They had a #19 that I'd been wanting so I splurged for $40, and am tickled with it. Because of buying 2 we got a discount (much cheaper than Halsey Drug) and a free 3 pack of filters for you. Your total is $25.00 including shipping......I'll include my address in the package....Glad to help....ted

Ted,

You're the best.  I'll send you the cash as soon as it's here.
I went about 20 miles out of town today for a test and stopped at a Walgreens and hanging there was a saddle bit Grand Duke shape #36.   Now that you've confirmed the rarity of my favorite Grabow maybe I should go back and grab it.
gillywalker

Ted,
I got the package today.  This has to be the best looking Grabow.  First off the grain looks really nice and it is not covered in the glossy lacquer like my other Grabows.  It's slightly smaller than my #36 Grand Duke, but I think it may be perfect because sometimes the Grand Duke takes too long to smoke a full bowl.  I'll be sampling some SWR in it after lunch.  I'll get your money to you too this afternoon.

Thanks again!
