Granger CuriosityI've read some of the posts here on Granger tobacco. As with others, I remember my dad and granddad smoking their pipes. When I got the pipe holder from my mom a few months back it still had a pouch of Granger from probably 40 years ago. I've wondered about trying Granger so I read some reviews on Tobacco Review.com. I was surprised to find so many positive reviews.
My question is: Should I spend the money ($15 - 20) for a tin? I like burley. I can't remember the aroma when my dad and grandad smoked it so I'm not sure what to think.
Is Granger a favorite of many here?
Thanks.

Have no experience with Granger. Buy a tin. You cannot evaluate a blend from a pouch, especially an old pouch, or even a new pouch.

RA, I haven't tried Granger either, let us know what you find out.

I've noticed that the 14oz tins go anywhere from $20-40 plus shipping. I'm a little nervous putting out that much right yet. I'll see if any others respond who've had some experience with it.

RA....You may have already been here, but if not, this is about as thorough a group of reviews as there is.....Enjoy....ted

Yes, Ted I did check out the reviews. Thanks. I was surprised there were so many good reviews.
I'm just hoping someone here might have some insight from their own experience. The folks here offer good direction ... just looking for more

Can't help from ever smoking it, but a couple of reviews got my attention. They said Granger was great for blending with other tobaccos.
I'm hoping you get it and maybe you'll "loan" me a little pinch....ted

Granger is a favorite of mine. I have a tub open, and 2 more as back-up. I would say go for it.

RA, JRCigar has it for 19 and change in the tin or 15.25 for a pouch six-pack. Plus shipping, of course, and I've heard their shipping has gotten high.
I'll look around here and see if I can find it anywhere in a single pouch.

Expect Mac to weigh in on this. I recall he has some experience with Granger. If not, I'm certain he will want to try.
You can always trade it here if you don't like it, but assure us it's better than Mix 79.

Thank you Steve for checking around on this. That seems like the best price I've seen so far.
DR, I've never tried Mix 79. It's not one of your favorites I take it
Codger, what does it say on the tin in your picture? I can't make it out ... looks like Granger??

It's an old Granger ad. It says - "The only pipe smoker who does not like it..is the one who never tried it."

That's a great saying. I like the tin too.

i tried a poiuch of granger some time ago after reading several good reviews. in some of the reviews there is mention of an almost plastic taste about half way through the bowl, well sure enough about the middle of the pipe i got it and didn't like it. tried it again after a couple of days and got the same thing. i would try a few pouches before buying a whole tin. good luck, ahgar

I was wondering about that ahgar. I had read the same things. Some mentioned it and some didn't even seem to notice it. I guess sometimes these sort of things can be kind of subjective??

I had been smoking Granger for a while before I read the reviews. I hadn't noticed the "burning plastic" taste, and was surprised to read that many had reported the same problem. I've gone through numerous pouches and tubs of it without a problem.

I've thought about the taste issue and have been trying to remember my dad or granddad mentioning it. I can't recall them having any issues with it. I kind of don't think they'd have kept on smoking it if it had. But, back in those days I don't know what kind of selections they had to choose from. I do know my dad smoked half & half too and liked it. I'm not sure if he favored one over the other though. I wish he was alive to ask him.

i've tried a few of the old time brands, PA, CH, and the Granger was the only one that i didn't like. guess i might need to try another pouch to see if i just got a bad one. seems to have a lot of fans. one thing about tobacco it is all subjective, a matter of taste.

You gotta take it out of the plastic pouch before you smoke it . . . --RJ--

You're right - it's all subjective. I like many of the old time burleys. And while I enjoy PA, and know it has many fans, I'll take Granger over PA.
