Haunted Bookshop

I just tried Cornell and Diehl's Haunted Bookshop for the first time.  I never knew C&D had an equivalent for Mixture 79.

Can it really be that bad, Steve?

You just can't keep a good blend down.
steverino

I was really surprised.  It has that same sort of scented aroma, and it doesn't really go away down the bowl like it does with 79.  The plus side is that it does have some actual burley tobacco flavor to it, so it's not all that bad.  But if you've ever smoked 79, you'll definitely recognize the aroma.  I will say that not a single reviewer on tobaccoreviews.com mentions the Mixture 79 connection, so it could be something peculiar to my batch, or it could just be me, but as Monk would say, "I don't think so".

I will try to remember not to buy any of that!!

Um..did'nt you get the memo..that's not first on the list!LOL. Now you got me hesitent to try this one!
The C&D Autumn Evening is tasty! Just like Maple bars!Yum!

Yeah, I know, I'm not going by the list.  It turned out that I had already tried 6 of the 14 blends, so I'm going to try the ones first that I haven't already tried.

And please don't forgo the HB on my account - you may have a completely different reaction.

Steve, why in the world were you up at 3:03 AM ?
ted

...Haunted Bookshop......
steverino

Well, I think it was 5:03 here, but I don't know for sure, after all, I was asleep...or at least half-way.  And ted, some tobacco does affect me that way - I try not to smoke after about 9 p.m.

I usually wake up between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. whether I want to or not and just sit on the couch and watch Fox News for a while, or get on the computer, so that's why I was here at that time.  Nothing else to do...including sleep.

If HB is anything like Mix 79, I know Oz won't be getting up at 4 a.m. to smoke it.

And you can take that to the bank!!  Exclamation

Interesting.  Everyone raves about HB on other sites and some call it something like a boutique burley blend.  HB was one of the first tobaccos I was able to smoke at a decent rate and little amounts of relights.  I don't smoke it much anymore because after awhile it started to taste ashy too me.  I like Carter Hall better.
steverino

In all fairness, I smoked a couple more bowls of HB and it wasn't that bad.  It does tend to be a little strong for me, but it's decent.  I do like various burley blends and am working on Crowley's Best and Gentleman Caller now.
gillywalker

mmmm Gentleman Caller has Deer Tounge in it right?  I liked Crooner better than HB maybe Gentleman Caller is more up my avenue.
steverino

Yes, GC is the first deer tongue blend I've tried and it's quite tasty.  I've not tried the Crooner though have heard a lot about it.  I was fortunate to sit down with the guy who blended GC and have a sample of it about a year before it came out, and I think the deer tongue was a little more prominent in the prototype than in the "real thing".  I need to smoke a little more before making a full judgement on it.

Do you have any Crooner on hand now?  If you like, I'd be glad to swap you two or three bowls of GC for some Crooner for comparison's sake.

I glad I'm not the only one.  I bought some some back in Dec. because I kept hearing what a great burley blend it was - not.  I tried several bowls, but it never got any better.  I much prefer my Granger, CH, and SWR.
steverino

Yeah, I know what you mean.  I'm finding that Crowley's Best is better if you like burley.  I taste the latakia way in the background and don't sense much of anything from the perique - I'm sure it contributes in some way I don't recognize.  Has a nice, subtle sweetness through about the first third to half of the bowl, then just burley from there on out.  Not bad.

Crooner was actually one of the only blends I've smoked all the way through.  It's a frustrating smoke but I love that deer tongue.
