Hello from Missouri-new memberHi, my name is Ed. James and I live near Poplar Bluff,Mo. I'm a retired construction worker. Picked up the pipe about 4years ago after smoking cigarettes for 35 years, although I did flirt with the pipe back when I was in Uncle Sams Canoe Club back in the early 70's. Pipes and tampers have become my new hobby.I enjoy refinishing old pipes and making tampers. I smoke mostly Peter Stokkebye(did I spell that right ?) Optimum in Dr. G's and Medico's and a few others that I have modified to take a filter. I met RJ through his website. I had contacted him to see if he could tell me anything about a Grabow I bought that has a nekked lady carved on it. Glad I found this site! It is nice to be able to talk about the lowly Grabows, some of the other forums seem to concentrate to much on the "high grade" pipes, which I probably would'nt buy even if I could afford them!

Hey Ed.
Glad you could join us. Ya gotta post a pic of that pipe you referenced. It was probably a PX pipe carved by a soldier. Would love to hear what RJ said as his knowledge is volumous and mine is only footnote worthy.
Perhaps we chose a good time to start this forum with the economy tanking and all, pipesmokers might just appreciate a 30 dollar pipe! Similarly with people giving up on the cigs, the pipe is a good alternative. I expect it'll ADD years to my life!
Poke throught the forum, enjoy and please get involved. Selling duzzint count aas this aint a test! : )

WelcomeThank you Gents!! I did try to post a picture of that pipe but it would'nt go. Will try again with this post. I have not done anything to this pipe since buying it. Thought about going ahead and refinishing it-it still has some of the original varnish on it. Carving is very nice. Some one put a lot of work into it!!

Carving looks Vietnamese? Is that possible?

Could there have been enough wood to carve this in relief, post production?
I'm not familiar with Vietnamese carving. Did Vietnam vets have pipes carved for them?
In regards to the Picture. It did actually post to the Gallery, but not to your post. I think its a size issue. Its always a size issue ain't it?
Anyway, that Sir is a fine pipe and thanks for sharing it with us.

I figure folks who do carving like that are enduring some long & lonely days.
My father in law was a seaman, and we have a framed sailing ship he made from wooden matchsticks.
southpaw, what is the 4-digit stamped number on that (if it has one)?

Nekked LadyThe pipe is marked Linkmans Dr. Grabow one side, the other says Special with Italian briar below that and the number 4966. What I have never seen is the stem marking(Washburn). See pic.

Howdy, Ed, great to see you found this DGCF! Ed makes some fantastic pipe tampers, including one I got from him made from a Dr. Grabow shank and stem.
The 66 is a fairly LARGE apple shape -- it definately would have enough wood, I think, for someone to carve the relief if they knew what they were doing -- and obviously the person that did the carving and the name engraving seemed to know what they were doing. Great pipe, Ed!
Here's the "66" shape before ornamental carving:

DUH! This didn't even occur to me that the "Washburn" on the stem might have been the man who carved the Nekkid Lady!
Thanks RJ for clearing my fog. Ed, I think I have seen your tampers on eBay?
I agree, they are nice! I'd buy one.

Or it was the man someone carved the pipe FOR. Either way, it was all nicely done, and since the pipe is from the 1950s or before, probably done along time ago.

You should. Grabow should have him make tampers for them -- yet ANOTHER way to get rid of little pieces of briar that are too small to make pipes out of! --RJ--

Hi RJ,thanks for the welcome ! Actually I think I found this site after visiting you site a few days ago. Was trying to find some info on Grabows-can't remember now what it was.( See signature) Anyway I found a link for this site and glad I did. That tamper holding out alright? Whats your opinion on restoring my Nekked Lady pipe? It still has the original finish on the shank and has a few spots that show light sanding marks. stem could use some work as well. Should I just leave it alone or not?

Both tampers are great! They were too pretty to carry around and use, so I only use them every once in awhile at home -- mostly they get displayed.
I think it would be fine to "restore" your pipe. You are good at working with wood and finishing it, so it could only enhance the looks of the pipe and make the carving and the rest of the pipe match better. Use caution around the name stampings and whatever is left of the other stampings as too much cleaning or buffing tends to wipe out light stampings. I think it would be a nice touch to leave them on there. Other than that, go for it -- it'd make it a real knockout of a piece. --RJ--

Defineatley put em up in the trading post.
I got some stems I'd part with too and probally some briar scraps that might help ya too. The stems are Guidici Vulcanite. Not Grabow, but Grabow before they switched to ABS plastic used the same.

* But if ya dress up the lasy some then whe won't be Nekkid!!!

I was thinking of just putting a necklace on her, maybe some heels! Are the stem you have push type or screw? With the screw type I have to have the pipe shank as I have no way to turn a piece of briar. All of my machining is done in a drill press! A push stem I can fit to shank of bowls I have. All the tampers I have made up are on Ebay right now. If they dont sell I could offer them up here.

TampersPic of tampers I have made. The two on the left have been sold. The one on the right was made from a can -bottle opener-business of opener is beside it.

A couple of push. No screw. All new. Some Vucl. Some scrap Arcylic. Some without tenons yet turned... I can email you a pick or just send them to you, if you can use them you can use them. If not. So be it.
Nice work.
