I've been Ebaying....

I just wanted to share a little (Brag shamelessly) about a few of my most recent fleabay finds.

First up, it's not all about pipes, I'm not sure why I bought this I'll never use it but it looks so cool sitting on a rack with my pipes.

Then this Deluxe saddle bit pot a while back, nearly unsmoked and a twin to a heavly smoked pipe already in the herd.

Then just yesterday I got an unsmoked Linkman's Olde London little Dublin, shape stamped 8824 and Imported Bruyer. Complete with box  Laughing

I'm hoping someone might have an idea as to when this little beauty might have sold for the princely sum of $1. I paid $15 delivered So I don't think that's bad for a brand new Linkman in my favorite shape. I may have a hard time actually smoking this one though. I know they were made to smoke but it's made it this long...

Thanks in advance guys for any info and for putting up with me showing off a little. I was pretty excited getting the little Dublin in the mail.

oooo, Mac's gonna go nuts over that OLDE LONDON square cut cleaner and box.

Nice old Linkmans  Texhealer!  I can understand you not wanting to smoke it!! I have a couple of Grabows in the box that I have never smoked ,and some of the pipes I have restored I will not smoke. I can't tell you anything about it but maybe Drb and Mac or Ted or -- can.

Nice acquisitions there, congrats and enjoy Smile

Keep bragging -- I enjoy it!  DRB is much more knowledgeable about those OLDE LONDONs than I am (I stick to Grabows).  My first impression, based on that cleaner design, is that it is OLDE (punn intended), right along the 1931 to 1933 or so period.  It COULD be even older.  Of course, none of this is an exact science, so it could even be newer.  We do know the OLDE LONDONs and FIFTY GRANDs used the SPADE emblem on the stem, long before the Dr. Grabow line got them (which originally used the "propeller" emblem.  Little things like that remain a mystery.

Great pipe, though!  And cigar holder!  Luckily I wasn't involved in the bidding on those.  But I couldn't resist smoking them at least ONCE.  Very few of my pipes escape my rotation except for some very old full display cards and one or two boxed pipes.  --RJ-- (Mac)

Ah HA! See there I am learning, and thanks you guy's for the kind words and the expantion of my education.

I opened the Linkman in front of the wife and a co-worker and told them I was just guessing but that I thought about 1930 to 1935. I did not know tho that the spade had ever pre-dated the propeller, I had always assumed that it was just a transition from one to the other.

As for smoking it I'll probably wait for some special occasion to fire it up, and there's certainly one coming this fall. Given my love of small Dublins and  Old pipes I doubt seriously that I'll be able to stop at just once though. And I just know this little guy will make the VA flakes sing. Cool

Oh and the cigar holder was a bid but the Linkmans was a buy it now, $15 and free shipping So I jumped on it, it probably hadn't been listed long.

Olde London

Txhealer, I've collected at least 3 OLDE LONDON pipes. They all are push stem.

Two use a simple thin line font all upper case to spell OLDE LONDON, with no Linkman, described as Imported Briar, and feature a white circle on the left side of the stem. The also don't have an inventory stamping for finish and shape.

The third one uses the old italic font as shown on your box. It is also stamped Made by Linkman, and Imported Bruyere, with a 2-digit inventory stamp 01 (a straight billiard), and a white top spade stem emblem. The mouthpiece is slightly concaved. The cleaner is a large 3-ball affair.

My guess is that the 3rd OLDE LONDON pre-dates the other two.

Sometime ago, an eBay seller claimed the OLDE LONDON was sold by Larus Bros. with their Edgeworth pipe tobacco. The auction item was a package of Edgeworth with an OLDE LONDON pipe. That may be why we haven't uncovered any OLDE LONDON pipes included in Linkman's ads, or mention in the RTDA almanacs from the period.

Linkman did use the spade emblem on some of his pipes other than DG, and we think he first used the spade on non-DG pipes. His OLDE LONDON and 50 GRAND for example.

I think the first DG pipe Linkman stamped with a spade emblem was the 8400 series DG SELECT GRAIN, and it got 2 spades - one on the shank and one on the stem. I also think Linkman always oriented his stem spade emblem to point to the mouthpiece. After 1953, when HLT moved DG to Sparta, they apparently rotated the top spade emblem 180 degrees so it pointed to the pipe bowl. They continued to make DG pipes using the old Linkman model names for a few years, but without the inventory stamping, and usually as Ajustomatics. Later, as they introduced their own DG models, the spade was relocated to the left side of the stem.

I've read the whole idea of a stem emblem began when Dunhill customers couldn't figure out if their stems were upside down or right side up. So Dunhill began adding a small white spot on the top of the stem. The idea caught on.

It is possible that when HLT acquired DG from the DGPC and Linkman in 1953, it included an outstanding order from Larus Bros. for OLDE LONDON pipes, and some were made in Sparta. I have nothing to substantiate that. Just saying it is possible we will someday turn up a Sparta made OLDE LONDON pipe.

I had a feeling someone from this group would be bidding on that pipe. Congratulations!!

eBay Wins

I just won 2 DG pipe auctions on eBay. The 1st is a carved GOLDEN DUKE #81 Author-Bull Moose shape. The 2nd is a COLLECTOR 2003 #37L Bent Billiard shape. Sorry if I outbid anyone here in the DGCF to win them.

I don't bid as often on eBay as I once did, and I am more selective nowadays. DG #83, #81, #37, #67, and FREEHANDS still get my interest.

If I outbid you on an eBay auction, Oz, I never will claim it was your fault.

Is it a deal?
