In the Groove

Ever have one of those days when everything goes just right?  Yesterday afternoon, Trease and I drove to Nashville to bring our son home for Fall Break.  We stopped in Morristown, TN, around 5:00 PM to top-off fuel and food.  After a good meal at IHOP, we got back in the car around 5:45 to continue our journey.  I filled and lit my DG Big Pipe Dublin (purchased in Sparta, by the way) before we got back on the Interstate.

Even though there was a light drizzle, just enough to be annoying, everything about the next hour just clicked.  I set the cruise control to 75, and although there was quite a bit of traffic, never touched it once for the next hour or so.  Any one who's ever driven through Knoxville rush hour traffic can tell you how unusual that is.  Truckers don't call it "Malfunction Junction" for nothing.  Every time I thought I'd have to slow down, the cars in front of me just miraculously moved over into the slower lanes.  I never touched the brake once all the way through town, all the way to the I-40/I-75 split.

The pipe had a lot to do with it, I think.  During that whole time, it was perched in the corner of my mouth, and I never had to relight.  Just the occasional tamp. It just kept burning.  No muss, no fuss.  Lasted the entire 65, or so, minutes of this leg of the trip, and at the end there was only ash.

I've never had such an experience on any previous trip through Knoxville.  I think I'll take all DG Big Pipes from now on.

Thats the kind of drive I like! Cruise, pipe, and some Clapton or Alman Brothers crankin' in the stereo. Used to do that a lot until I retired.

You got it, Barry.  Walnut is my usual traveling tobacco.  It's easy to pack, and I know what kind of smoke I'm going to get.

Yes Ed, My first Social Security check comes on 10/26. I quit working in 04'. Had enough odd jobs and outside income to get me to 59 1/2. Started drawing my 401K then. It kept me going till I was 62.
Now it's time for the new money....ted

59 1/2 is what I am waiting on!! Got an annuity I can get my grubby paws on then!!!

Didn't realize you guys were all such youngsters.  Just turned 68 today and my gift to myself is yet another month in the Philippines and Thailand, leaving tomorrow!

I highly recommend retirement to anyone who can afford it.

Happy Birthday to you Irishlefty and good luck to you buddy. I hope you have many more happy returns Smile

Youngsters!... I guess it's all relative. I moved my daughter from Philadelphia back to VA today. I've never felt so old.

Happy Birthday Irish, I hope it was a great day!
