Lane Pipes

Anyone seen these, tell me you don't get the feeling these are still made in Sparta. If not then who is making the Lanes?

BW, I purchased a couple of the SWR models. They were definitely from Sparta, although they are push tenon non-filter models. I recommended them at the time to pipe smokers who might be looking for non-filter DG pipes.

My guess is these were produced in Sparta before the IP&A purchase, and so they represent a limited inventory.

The mortise is drilled long enough to hold a very short 1/3 length section of DG filter, if the smoker prefers a filter smoke. The stem tenon doesn't seat all the way to the bottom of the mortise, at least on my 2 SWR samples.

And Oz will be pleased to know they appear to be vulcanite, not ABS bits.

So, is Lane still distributing pipes?

Yep, looks like my SWR #83 ESQUIRE model I bought from the locked display at the factory -- GREAT pipe!

I may have the only one stamped "Dr. Grabow" though, which was done while I waited, thanks to TED

At the same time as I bought the above pipe, I purchased another that I just fell in love with at first sight.  It was an unmarked #84 shape pipe, so I don't know what line or whatever it might have been made for.  I love the lucite bit!  Unfortunately, it developed a crack after a while and I didn't notice it until I was getting it ready for another smoke.  The crack hasn't hurt the smoke, so I haven't worried about fix'n it.  It also got stamped "DR. Grabow" while I was there (along with my Big Pipe).

BW...Guess what we are saying is.....You gotta' get to the factory.....ted

Well, I was particularly attracted to that pipe because it DIDN'T have a band and the color of the lucite bit and the stain of the briar melded together well, I thought.  It's hard to glue cracks back together (I have done it), but until it either affects the smoke or a chunk breaks out, I wasn't going to worry about it yet.  If and when it DOES break out, I'll probably use Gorilla Glue and bind it together.  That has worked fairly well for me in the past.  --RJ--

RJ, that's going to be an ugly mess if you let that crack go on like that. You should just box that pipe up and send it on to Ed to 'take care of' for you.

one at a time Ed!

While I appreciate the plug,I am not set up to do bands. Don't have the bands which can be bought from JH Lowe (Tim West) and is something I have little experience doing
The only pipes I have banded, I did  with a band swiped from a MM cob!.
One thing I have done is widen the crack INSIDE the mortise and glue it with JB weld !
ted

Ed, Of all things, I have a Thomas Martin Original.....Remember him....started this forum along with David and Mac....sorry RJ.

It has the same crack...from conception...could you fix it? I'll send you a few hands of burley for your efforts?.....Please....ted

Whadaya talkin' about! I figured all you'd have to do is hold it in your hand and wish it well.

Actually I was making a joke about us acquiring RJ's pipes. If you look at the post, in tiny letters it says " one pipe at a time ED!"

Well since the trade is in the mail already Ted I would be glad to give it a shot. If you want to send the pipe to me I'll look at and let you know what I can do.

I wish Tom would come back!! I miss him!!

Me too brother. I keep up with him via e-mail, but "no chance" at this point. He is back to smoking (and enjoying) a pipe....ted

Ted,if I can't fix it,there are a couple of guys out there that I would recommend to fix it. If I think I can't do it and do it right I won't touch it. Will not risk doing further damage!!

Ed, I'll send it in a day or two. I'm in Florida and have to get home. Ever "thumbed" up I-95.

I'll be home in a day or two and will send it before I come back. If you can.....Tom Douglas, 1601 SE 8th Ave, #510, Crystal River FL..34429. I'll pay you for any "out of pocket" expenses.

Thank you "aint enough,,,,,,but I don't know what else to say. Tom Martin is "special" to you, me, and several others. This pipe is as special as he is. It was cracked....just like Tom......before he sent it to me and is a piece of "art" as he would see it. I also see it.

Ed, I appreciate your trying.......ted
