Latest purchase

First off sorry I haven't been poking my ugly head around here lately. Been busy getting ready for my upcoming nuptials. Anywho, on to more important matters, I happened to win this Westbrook on eBay tonight. Can't wait to get it here and cleaned up.

Looks like a nice hunk of wood Wesley, glad you got it.  Bet it'll smoke good.

Starfire and Golden Duke

Gentlemen, just got a Starfire and Golden duke off Irish Lefty on Ebay. He did a very good job fixing them up.
Question: the Starfire has a stinger with that scoop on the end, and does not have "imported briar" on the bottom. It is a black kind of rusticated in narrow lines pipe. Does anyone know how old it might be?
The Duke has a thread, but no stinger -- a gap for a 6 mm filter, I would guess, and does not have imported briar on it. It is fully rusticated, and actually the rustication looks good. Not the standard flames carved in it.

Any ideas on the ages?

Regards,

Peter

Great pipe at an excellent price!  WESTBROOKs, right or wrong, are highly coveted it seems and I am surprised this one went that cheap!  The only reason I don't pick more of them up is they are not shape number stamped and I am not a big fan of the wire carving.  I have a few, but my favorite Westbrooks are smooth finished ones.  --RJ--

Thanks! I got it in yesterday and hope to get  some cleanup work done this week. I've been looking for a pot in that finish and was happy to see one pop up, let alone for .99 cents. I think the cleanup will go well. The cake isn't too thick and the grime isn't too bad. I'll be sure and post some pictures when it's spiffed up and ready to smoke.

That is a great price, wish I could snag some of those. Great pipe too. I've got one just like it, and it has turned out to be a great smoker. Large bowl with thick sides. I wasn't a fan of the finish either, but it is growing on me. I have a few others in that finish that I'm still working on/ The bulldog at the bottom was touched by OS. (where is Ed these days?)

I use a brass detail brush to get the crud out of the grooves, then a plastic detail brush to reduce the wax buildup before buffing. If you don't have a buffing wheel, a microfiber cloth works great.  Enjoy this one!

I actually prefer the wire brushed or wire carved finish. I guess cause I can shove it in my pocket and not worry about it, lol. BWThomas, I hope mine looks that good when I'm done with it!

If your looking at that light colored bulldog and hoping for that finish on yours, you need to pick Ed's brain (OS) to find out what he did. He's put that color on three of the pipes I got from him, both smooth and wire carved. That's a pretty finish.

I honestly think he just holds them in his hand and thinks of a color, but he might tell you different.  Oh...did I mention, Ed does magic with the pipe!

The finish on Barrys Westbrook bulldog is original if I remember right. All I did was clean and buff it using the same procedure that Barry speaks of. Those little brass wire brushes are great for cleaning rusticated finishes. I can't remember right off the top of my head what stain I used on the other two pipes of Barrys.
