Let see your Dr.Grabow Belvederes

Lets see your Belvedere Dr Grabow pipes.

From my notes on Belvedere from forum posts, mostly as usual from TED, thank you TED.

Belvedere was named after a Rooster. or vice-versa.

Made from 1957 till 1964. 7 years! (Timeline has them made 1955 - 1964)

Westbrook was one of several pipes (Berwyck, Belvedere, Emperor, and Sculptura) that were made by Grabow and distributed by R. J. Reynolds.

A coupon was placed into bags of Carter Hall and George Washington tobacco that was redeemable for these Grabow pipes. Belvedere was $1 and 5 coupons for part of its life. This offer started in the mid-50's and ended in the late 80's. It was the longest running redemption offer in history.

From TED: I remembered very little about the coupon pipes. It  is ,however, my opinion that Westbrook and BELVEDERE probably started at the same time. Remember "FIRST PIPES" . The RJR coupons didn't give a  name or shape choice. It was only after one had ordered a pipe that they got the "shape chart" which gave options as far as NAMES and shapes.
An order from the coupon got a "FIRST PIPE". These  were  Dublins,
Billiards, and Pots  (fruits didn't sell well (apples and pears)) . The FIRST PIPES were always Westbrook, at least as far as I know,. The shape chart and advertising were wonderful. Done by Green Printing ....Zeb Green.. in High Point...They did a bunch of stuff for the nc furniture industry..td

Belvedere was one of the first (maybe THE FIRST) wire carved pipes ever. Check the carving on a Starfire or Viscount.... and then a Belvedere. There is a difference.

Pre- 1964 and the Surgeon Generals report... Belvedere was made from the very best briar available in our universe.
Willard, and Berwyck, Belvedere, and Westbrook were what kept the Grabow factory working (made the payroll) until 1964/5.

BELVEDEREs that also have the rook cleaner, and I suspected they were earlier ones as later Belvederes seem to all have the spoon type...RJM

Note that HL&T Pre-Sparta made a Belvedere line, early 1940's for a few years.  Post these too if you have any.

Also, if you have any additional info on Belvedere history please post it too.

I'll go first:

Nice ones. Gerald. 47
Abe Frohman

I keep meaning to get in on all these threads about specific lines but I never do.  I procrastinate too much I think.

I think the Belvedere was named after the Plymouth Belevedere not the Rooster. In fact, I think Ted/Tom at one point said the Belvedere line was cancelled after a Grabow exec saw a cartoon with the rooster Belevedere and decided he didn't want anymore pipes named after the bird!

Here's a couple of Belvederes I've restored over the years. Don't have them anymore and don't remember where they went, maybe to one or two of the forum members ... Dave

Jim Morrison (JWM) needs to pipe up on this one.  Belvedere is his favorite, and he's got a parade of'em!

HL&T Pre-Sparta made Belvedere line, early 1940's

HL&T Pre Sparta Belvedere dates from early 40’s and made for a few years.  Not same line as Belvedere made at Sparta by HL&T and sold as coupon pipes for RJR…. TED

Appears that the old Pre-Sparta HL&T Belvedere’s were stamped BELVEDERE and IMPORTED BRUYERE in a gold colored stamping.
