LETS SEE YOUR 81's

We have several forum members asking about the different models or lines of Grabow shape 81's.  So lets help them out - LETS SEE YOUR 81's.

A great help will be for you to identify the 81's you showcase with the model or line name.  Also point out any unusual characteristics or rarities of your 81's.

I'll go first:
Belvedere; first shape 81, 1955  to 1963/4.

Eldorado; modern shape 81, 1963/4 and after.  Finish is the original natural finish (I think) Carnauba wax buffed and no lacquer, 1956 to 1966.  So this 81 would date from 1963/4 to 1966.

My three remaining 81s:

A Carl Purdy sandblast:

My plain vanilla acrylic stem 81 unstamped from the back room at the factory on the 2010 tour. I rusticated out the pits in the briar:

My Sparta-made Wimbledon:

Here are some of the 81s I have restored and passed on in the past:

A remade from an old batter blue Color Duke

A miscellaneous group of Sparta-made non-DG stamped 81 - Wimbledon, Gatlin Burlier, etc.:

A restemmed 81 with a step-down bit:

A trio of miscellaneous 81s:

Belvedere:

An old no-name DG 81:

A group of miscellaneous 81s:

Must be nice I would die if I had just a fraction of that amount of pipes no wonder they're few and far between out there lol
JoeMan

That's why some of us used to call him "81 Dave"...nice ones, Dave!!!  The #81 examples of Dave, Sean and others began to turn my opinion of this shape...and once I was bitten by the 81 bug...I wanted one in every Grabow line.  While I do NOT have one in every line...I do have a nice group of them (including the orange / lucite stemmed Hillcrest Dave showed above...a treasure from my friend).  I'll show'em Wednesday night when I'm back in town.
Oldredbeard

The early style 81 Viscount, Thanks again Tom.

The only picture I have of this Westbrook is with this 83.

A Blond Eldorado.

A late style Viscount, with some really nice flame grain.

A later Eldorado.

And a nice flame grain un-stamped, with a non-filter push tenon.

vwdeano

Great stuff, fellas...  I'll try to get pics of mine when I'm back home tonight.

Dave, those are great 81's.  Like the rustication youve done.  Is the emperor an old style 81 shape?

The Emporer was a present from Ed James from his Emporer collection when I visited him in Missouri a year or so ago and knelt at the Skyliner alter to all Dr. Grabows. I smoked it for a while and then returned it to him go put back in his Emporer collection. It was a wonderful smaller 81 but I don't know if it was old style or new style or what the difference in the two styles are. Maybe Ed can fill us in ... Dave

Nope. It's unstamped. I scored that lil beauty from 81 Dave. It's one of my faves. It's a bit smaller/lighter than the others.

Hmm. Interesting. It does look like your stem and shank is a bit longer, now that I looked at it again. By the way, that Eldorado of yours is just sick.  Laughing

pipesbywhitney

Nice collection of 81s. I once had a couple dozen or more of them and although I like to smoke them a lot of them started gathering dust so I passed them on to others bitten by the 81 PAD bug. Still have four or five in my smoking collection. Enjoy!
