Lets see your Commodores

Lets see your Commodores (Next week we'll do Sculpturas)

Commodore and Sculptura is my favorite finish of Grabow pipes.  I have collected a few notes from forum posts about the Commodore line.

"Commodore was made from 1964 to 1992.  The best sandblasted pipe EVER was the Grabow Commodore, Sculptura, and later on the Eldorado".
Glenn Murphy GRHS was a stickler for perfection... if the briar allowed... Glenn "blasted" from 1969 till 1989. Most all "blasted pipes" are at Glenn's hands.   Commodore was introduced in 1964 and available in continental shapes from the beginning of Commodore production…...In those days Eldorado, Viscount, and Starfire cost within pennies of each other to produce. Commodore was more expensive because of the 95 pieces per hour to blast.  Pipes were made and only became a Sculptura or Commodore at stamping (the last operation).....TD.   All Commodores were supposed to be number stamped.  Ive never seen one not but there may be a few out there that were missed...."

I'll go first
Commodore #11

Commodore #36
pwoodard

Great looking pipes, thanks for sharing.  I don't have any of those yet; but they are on the list.
Oldredbeard

I really like that 36, but they are both nice. I don't have any Commodores.

I was about to say!  Timmy...400 pipes (or more at last count I believe), and no Commodores?  Well, we'll just have to keep an eye out for you!!   Cool

I too like that 36, and I like the band-less Commodores best.  I'll post my small group tonight.

Holy crapola!  600+ and no commodores?  Why am I having a hard time believing that?
ozark southpaw

These are the ones I have shined up.

This is the only Commodore I've seen that isn't number stamped. It is also the only Sparta made pipe of this shape that I have seen.

JoeMan

Ed, the only similar pipe I've seen is the Linkman/Grabow 9789 shape:

And it's interesting that yours has the metal collar at the end of the shank (like Westy and Belvedere), which Commodore's don't have. Regular ajusto tenon?

Yep,ajusto.  It is quite similar to the 89. but the shape is closer to that Alpha I'd say.

Joe, those are really nice. At first glance that 40 looked like a 22, is that a replacement stem? Thought they had a saddle.

Here's my lone Commodore, a 65 from the back room. No current pic, this was taken fresh out the mailer.

Right you are.  It came with the wrong stem...and straight to boot.  But it registered well at the shank, so I bent it and left it be.

Dandy pipes, Gerald.
Oldredbeard

I really like that 65 Gerald.

Yeah that's a nice one.
JoeMan

Gerald, I'll trade you 2 Larks for it.

When you say 'back room', do you mean from Sparta?  That is really nice.

JoeMan wrote:

Gerald, I'll trade you my Commodore 65 and no Larks for it, maybe a Duke...

Yes, Joe, the back room from Sparta. Got it when Tom found a few Commodores in there and posted them. Came in good shape, just a little shinier now, and more caked.
JoeMan

I'm hoping we get our tour confirmed for April...and that there are MORE back room offerings this time!  The GM said no promises...but if there are, he'll have them out on a table for us to peruse thru.
Thelonious Monkfish

It would be nice to make it and see the facility and obviously get my hands on some back room deals. If I can't I may need someone to be my eyes and find me another 65 outta there. And maybe some loose spades from the floor to dress up hobbled together pipes.

Nice Gerald. The 86,especially without the band is the best looking bulldog that Sparta made-- IMO.
