Lets see your Dr.Grabow Continental series shapes

Here are some note I have collected from forum posts, mostly from TD - thank you TED.

"In the late 50's Grabow salesmen and managers bought every "fancy" pipe they could find and sent them all to Sparta. In 1958/59 Gracen Lucas and Jimmy Jones copied and designed over 100 (136 I believe) Continental shapes.   At a sales meeting in 1959 the salesmen picked the 18 shapes that they wanted introduced into the Grabow lines.   Since the factory had to start from scratch making these it took quite a while to get enough pipes to sell.   Best I know, some of the shapes picked were not practical for the factory and were eliminated and some shapes didn't look as good as expected. Six shapes were dropped. In our universe there are a very few of 3 Continental shapes that were made and sold, but didn't make the final cut.

Continentals were introduced on a 12 piece display card as Eldorado, Viscount, and Starfire Continentals. There is some advertising material somewhere on the Forum that shows the card.   These new pipes gave Grabow a much needed sales and profit boost at a time they really needed it. Probably helped keep the factory running until 1964 and the Surgeon Generals report on smoking."...TED

"The 1964 shape chart shows 12 of the 18 shapes originally available for regular production lines.  Note that the 25 and the 41 were not part of the X0 series and were not offered as Coupon pipes."....TED ( Exception below)

"When the Continentals started in 1959/60 they were added to the RJR shape chart. I 'don't have a clue" as to why the XO numbers were used, but someone had a reason. Some Continentals ( 25 and 41)  were not included in the RJR offer and so they have no XO number."....TED

Regular production Continentals such as eldorado, , viscount, starfire, were given 2 digit numbers.

RJR coupon lines such as Emperor, Sculptura, Westbrook, were given X numbers for the coupon pipe chart but not stamped since no coupon pipes were stamped.  There were 10 X number shapes and X numbers did not include the shapes #25 and #41.

So no 25 or 41 coupon pipes were ever made theoretically that is.  A number stamped 25 in Emperor has showed up.  Maybe others are out there.

Silver Duke continentals have a somewhat different shank shape than original continentals due to the thick shank required of the filter tenon.

So lets see your Grabow Continentals:  I'll go first.

Did someone say 25? I got this one last year at the pipe show.

Emperor 24....it was beat all too hell when i got it. The rim looked like someone used it to crack  pounds of walnuts . I restored it and never even smoked it. I just don't care for a 24 i think they are quite ugly.

I got a barley smoke Starfire # 22 wirecarved  but needs a replacement stem.

So much eyecandy. Great looking pipes guys.

Troy, that's a fantastic collection. The Commodore 40 is a stunner!
Spadefan

Great looking pipes guys, especially those sandblasts
Troy_nov1965

Thanks Dave
That Commodore 40 was a NOS pipe when i got it . Its one of my favorite flake pipes.
In fact i smoke mostly flakes out of all my 40's . They are just the right size for flake i think .

Beautiful collection, Troy. I just have never gotten into the Continentals ...

Dont recall seeing your Savoy 24 before.
Nice one and must be rare at least I havnt seen one before.
Dont even recall seeing a wire carved Savoy in any shape.
Is it ajusto?

I dont recall ever seeing any banded continental shapes except the Regal.
If they exist maybe someone will post it here.
JoeMan

Yes Gerald, it is ajusto Savoy with rook stinger. I snagged it as a  NOS / BIN on eBay, could not pass up such an odd pipe.

I love the 25! Need to find me one. Smile

Viscounts both shaped stamped
Thelonious Monkfish

Viscounts, 22, 24, 48. Aside from a Westbrook the 48 is the only Continental in rotation without a shape stamp.

PDXMike

These Continentals are some of my favorite pipes. I buy them whenever I can though it's getting harder these days!

These two recent acquisitions were found on ebay just listed as "vintage pipes". I believe the one in the front is a No 23. The only marking on it is "Imported Briar" stamped on the side. It's positively gleaming inside and out. It's an ajustomatic with a rook shaped stinger. Never been smoked. I have an Adventure No 24 that could be a brother to this pipe. Same finish and condition.

In that back is a No 41....I think. The stem is not the saddle style I see on the shape chart. It is very faintly stamped "Starfire" and under that " Dr Grabow". It has a screw on stem but has lost its stinger. I've been smoking this one already and enjoy  as much as the other 8 or 10 Starfires I already have =) I've never had a bad one.

Please correct me if I've gotten any of the info wrong.

Thelonious Monkfish

Nice ones, looks like a 22 up top, is the rim scooped?
pwoodard

Unbelievable pipes guys, I am always amazed by your collections!  Phil
PDXMike

Thanks!  So it's a 22? The rim is flat and has the same wire carving as the rest of the pipe.
Thelonious Monkfish

Must be a 41 then if the rim is flat, with the tapered stem from that angle it looks like a 22.
JoeMan

Mike, can you show that 41 directly from the side?  I agree with Alex, between the tapered / bent stem, it has a 22ish look, but I bet when we see it straight on from the side, the bowl will be slightly tapered toward the top.
PDXMike

Now you have me thinking this pipe was probably ....user  modified. I can see a possibility that the front could have knocked flat over the years.

JoeMan

Mike...I think this image confirms it's actually a 22.  Don't think it's been modified, just a bit worn on the rim is all.  Stem is correct.
Thelonious Monkfish

Yeah, that's a 22. The rim is just...tired.
PDXMike

That's okay if it's a bit tired. It'll last at least another 20 years under my care, and I won't have to worry about degrading a mint condition pipe =)

Careful, I'm the type that might take you up on that. One handful of CH from the tub and I can hang out with and smoke the pipes? Might have something for the collection too...

Sure, you can hang out and smoke pipes. You can smoke any of them except those on the Skyliner or other display card or any of those in a rack- well there may be a few in a rack that you could smoke. I'll loan you one of my smokers if needed, as long as you don't smoke aro's or Lakelands or Mix. 79 in them.

Free buff and wax ( maximum of three) de-oxidation not included.
Also coffee, soda or fruit juice and a tour of the shop where I show you how it is possible to put 10 LBS of "stuff" in a 5 LB. bag- along with a washer and dryer.

Buff and wax with coffee too huh, my hands will smear carnauba, how bout buff only for 6 pipes? And I've never smoked 79 or any Lakeland blends so your pipes are safe. You cover my gas and it's a deal. I'll bring a tub of CH and make a deposit or two for the collection.

Also do you use the washer and dryer in getting the 10 pounds of "stuff" in a 5 pound bag? Might need to see that.
ozark southpaw

I don't use the washer and dryer unless I have too. I have thought- at times- that it might be easier to clean pipes if I were to fill the washer with them and run them through a cycle or two!!
The washer and dryer and a water heater were in that room before I set up shop in it. I managed to get rid of the water heater when it went out--there is another in the garage. Couldn't talk the old woman into letting me move the washer and dryer up to the garage or out on the patio outside the basement door. I basically have one side of the room.

Gas is not included !!

Found this Viscount 23 in one of the racks.

Back when my 90-yer-old mother-in-law lived with us in the Florida Keys she would do laundry on Monday and one day picked up a pair of my jeans with a Dr. Grabow in the pocket and washed them. Not being able, or not wanting, to hear the noise the pipe made banging against the sides of the washer in the spin cycle she simply threw them in the dryer and ran the jeans and pipes through. I will attest to the fact that a properly washed and dried DG 81 will smoke fine!

ozark southpaw

So,if I put a pair or two of jeans in the machine...............

If you left your keys and some change in the pockets would it clean and rusticate?
