Lets see your Dr.Grabow Emperors

I'll go first.

Here's an Emperior 81 given to me by Ed James when I visited his Mecca of Dr. Grabows in Missouri a couple of years ago. Bottom is how it was when Ed cleamed up and the top photo is after it a while. It was great but eventually Ireturned it to him to keep in his Emperior collection (Ed has a whole box of them tucked away down in his basement workship - a fine collection of Emperors.)

Here is info about Emperors from my notes.

Emperor was the "top of the line" R.J. Reynolds coupon pipe for RJR in Carter Hall and other tobacco.. Made from #1 brair flawless A+ stummels and then wet selected for full flame type grain and no flaws.  "Natural" finish with carnauba wax and a leather buffing wheel, and then a soft felt wheel and NO lacquer.  Emperor made 1955 to 1985.  #1 Best quality pipe made at Sparta.  Some later Emperors had tiny fills.

Coupon pipes such as Westbrooks, Sculpturas, etc. were sold direct from the factory and did not receive the heavy lacquer used on retail pipes. The Emperor got none at all.

...few Emperors were sold in a year compared to the total Grabow production.. 1 or 2 for every 100,000 bowls we turned.  …..td

The Emperor and the early Eldorado are the same pipe --just different stamping. The Eldorado was the top of the line in the regular retail production. The Emperor was top of the line in the coupon pipe line up. Fills can be found in both lines--usually quite small and usually only one or two.

The coupon shape chart for Emperors and other coupon pipes has some info about how the Emperors are made.

Coupons were put in tobacco cans / pouches by RJReynolds and Grabow customers saved them, filled out an order form on the coupon and sent in cash equivalent to about 1/2 the retail price of the quality equivalent lne.

Eldorado = $10       Emperor =$5 + 25 coupons
Commodore = $7.95     Sculptura =$4 + 8 coupons
Golden Duke = $5.95     Berwyck =$3 + 8 coupons  There was no $ transfer to or from RJReynolds concerning coupons.  The coupons had no value to Grabow and were pitched by Grabow.  The coupons were simply a sales gimmick to attract customers.

FLawless flame grain for Emperors was so rare that Grabow kept the coupons required to order an EMperor at 25 so orders could (usually) be filled.  Sometimes not all shapes could be made since some stummels were not availabl in flawless flame grain so the order form for Emperor had 1st, 2nd, 3rd choice of shapes to order.
