Lets see your Dr.Grabow Hillcrests

Here are my notes on Hillcrest line combining several old posts from TED.

In about 78' Grabow stared making a "Seville" pipe for M/C. These were all smooth, and copies of pipes made in Italy by GIGI PIPE in Varese. They became one of the best selling pipes M/C had.  The shapes were "NEW" ones for Grabow, different from anything they'd ever made.

Grabow needed a "place" to sell the stummels that wouldn't make smooth Seville so Hillcrest was born. Construction changed a few times during it's lifetime. Hillcrest had rubber, abs plastic, and lucite stems at one time or another. It had a filter tenon that was aluminum color, brown, and black.  All the tenons were aluminum, the brown and black were anodized.  The aluminum color tenon started in 79' or 80' for only a year. The black tenon with black bit (rubber and abs) lasted for 4 or 5 years. From then on they were lucite/brown.  I believe Hillcrest continued till the end of Lane's ownership.

I don't know why, but the Hillcrest was consistantly the best "smoke" at the factory. The carving was a combination of machine and "by hand". And too, the shapes were larger than "Grabow" and therefore larger briar was used. Some of that briar had been in inventory since the 50's.

Quite a few Hillcrest were made over it's 20 year or so life, but only a "drop-in-the-bucket to the "regular" lines.

The carving was created by our old production manager Ray Wagoner. Ray started in 1946 and retired in about 1993.

The assortment for the hillcrest was 4 smooth and 8 rustic /dz......TD

I'll go first:

Outstanding set of Hillcrest Joe.
That 81 with a Lucite stem and spade is really pretty and rare.
vwdeano

Dandy stuff.  Those hillcrests make me realize all over again what a wonderful pipe grabow puts out...
JoeMan

By the way....the #80 above was a gift from Ed (and is still the only Hilly 80 I've seen to date), and the #81 was a gift from Dave Whitney.  Both of them were 'surprises', and these guys knew how tickled I'd be as a Hillcrest collector...and boy was I!
