Lets see your Regal Dr.Grabows

Regals dont get enough respect in my opinion.  Some of them have short shanks and most have shank extensions, but I think they are really high quality.  Wonderful briar on most.

Here are my notes from forum posts, as usual thank you TED for much/most of the info.

Regal started in 1956 and was made until about 2000.

Over the years we accumulated a TREMENDOUS amount of "short shanks". Shanks that were a bit too short for Viscount, Starfire, etc. We tried to use these up in "banded" versions of Viscount, Starfire, etc., but created more than we could use......Then came the Regal, with the WIDE aluminum band...... We had "A" and "E" bowls with short shanks that just fit into the Regal. Many of these, especially in the 60's and 70's are as good as Eldorado. Even the rustic (with a different carving) are special. Guess the best way to say it is, Regal is the "stepchild" of Eldorado. They were top of the line (in quality), but with a slightly shorter shank..........ted

Grabow only created a relatively small number of these shorter shanks. After Regal had been "running" for a while, and the inventory of shorter shanks was used up, regular shanks were used.  For a while regular shanks were cut off.....TED

Made smooth and rustic a very few were double wire carved.  Havnt seen any number stamped.  Most banded but some not.  Most all ajusto with the classic removable stinger.

Anyone have a push stem Regal?

I'll go first:

I think the saddlebit one might have been a push stem but it has been a long time and my old mind is not all that dependable anymore ... Dave

It's rare that I remember something I have, and even rarer for me to have a pic of it handy.  I was just looking at this Regal last night and was trying to remember where it came from.  I'm pretty certain I got it in a box of pipes my ex-father in law got me 10 years ago, and may be one of the best things I got out of that marriage.

Thanks, if I was a better hand at taking pics it'd have come out better, it's actually one of the better cross grained pieces I own.

So...does anyone have one of the rare Regals with a finish that is completely wire-carved?  Those who've been around a while may recall...a wire carved Regal 81 showed up on the bag a couple years ago or longer, and we all gawked over it.  Then, true to the 'law of ebay', 2 more showed up within a month.  Seems none have popped up since, unless we've just not talked about them.

Yes, beautiful grain.
One of my favorites.
No flaws.
Could have easily been made an Eldorado.

I remember seeing a wire carved Regal as well as a sandblasted Regal.  I think they were from a few years ago forum posts.

I guess we'll have to wait until one comes up on Ebay or someone finds one antiquing to see again.
