Lets see your Sculptura Grabows

Lets see your Sculptura Grabows

Here are my notes on the Sculptura line:

... , it is one of the best pipes ever made in Sparta. Selected for "special" grain, and sandblasted by hand, with his arms and hands in a sandblast "booth", by Glen Murphy at a rate of 70 pieces per hour.  Up till then (about 1968) Grabow never had a sandblast pipe, and most competitors S/B was done in a "cement mixer" using walnut shells as a "media". .....TD

Sculptura    Started 1967-1969   Ended 1985

Pipes were made and only became a Sculptura or Commodore at stamping (the last operation)….td

"The best sandblasted pipe ever was the Grabow Commodore, Sculptura, and later on the Eldorado".   Glenn Murphy GRHS was a stickler for perfection... if the briar allowed... Glenn "blasted" from 1969 till 1989. Most all "blasted pipes" are at Glenn's hands….td

Most sandblasted pipes from Europe were "blasted" using walnut shells, sand and gravel in a concrete mixer. Makes a nice finish....but flat.  Commodore and Sculptura were selected by our ladies for a specific combination of white and black wood in specific patterns and sandblasted by hand, one at a time (70/hr) using "glas shot" in a closed chamber by Glenn Murphy.  Electrical tape was used to keep the smooth spot for the stamp.. ted

I'll say it again... "The best sandblasted pipe ever was the Grabow Commodore, Sculptura, and later on the Eldorado".
Glenn Murphy GRHS was a stickler for perfection... if the briar allowed... Glenn "blasted" from 1969 till 1989. Most all "blasted pipes" are at Glenn's hands. .... td

The pictures below are scans of a Sculptura order Brochure.

The scans are a little fuzzy because the brochure is crinkled with age and I didnt want to crack it.

I'll go first:
22, 23, 24

+1 Very nice examples, and very good notes. Also happens to be another one I don't think I have any of.
Thelonious Monkfish

Nice, like the 22 but that 24 looks really good blasted. Like Red I have nothing in the Sculptura line and need to change that.

Ummm...wait...again...you....600 pipes...but....none....uuuhhhh....

JoeMan

Back to Gerald's 22.  Unless it be an illusion...the blasted graining seems to follow the contour of the front edge of the pipe.  See what I mean?

Carl, did this happen based on the pattern of the blasting tool...or is that actually following grain lines????

After chasing Starfires for a while, I kinda turned my sites to Sculpturas as of late. 85 81 TR31 37

I like the blast on that 37, did it come with the smooth rim?
WayneD

Not sure, Alex. I'd have to defer to the master of enabling, Dave W. I "think" he may have got it from Joeman or CE or something along that line.
JoeMan

Wayne...not from me.  And why did you spell the master enabler D-a-v-e?  It's actually spelled S-e-a-n. Cool

Benton...Wayne...those are some lookers ya got there.

So hows about these 2? Dave G remembers the 83.  He sacrificed it for a nice Sterncrest.  No tears, Dave!

The only Sculptura I kept over the past year or so seems to be this one of which I found the photo and can't find the pipe.

It had an orange spade logo like a Westbrook when I found it rather beat up so I just refinished it that way.

Did it wind up in someone else's collection here on the forum? My mind is slipping with increased velocity these days!
JoeMan

Dave...a few posts earlier...Wayne has it!!  Look close at the blast...that's definitely it, and with the smooth rim.  It now has a white spade, however.  The mystery is solved for both of you.
WayneD

Hey Dave, I scored that 37 from you back on March 2 but, I can't find it in the original posting anymore. Nice looking pipes, all of you guys. I now know I have some more collecting to do, in the Scultura line.

Thanks for baling out my failing memory, guys! It does look a bit more classy with the white logo! Enjoy! Dave W.

Spade, of all your groups, I am really impressed with your Sculpturas. I've only ever seen a few of these Sculptura Continentals in your collection. Love that 39 and 42!!

Thanks.  I am fortunate to be the current custodian of these beauties.  Grabow sandblast applied to the Commodore and Sculptura lines are by far my favorite finish.
TigerJack

Awesome pipes there bud.  I just bought 3 Sculpturas on ebay I will show down the road after refurb. G'Day Gents.

I did have to dab my eyes a bit when I seen that gorgeous 83, but when I look at my LHS bulldog, it makes me feel a little better. Smile you should post a pic of the right side of that 83.  It has some wicked ring grain.

Beautiful pipes guys.
TigerJack

I only have 3 as yet.
