Lets see your Westbrook Dr.Grabows

From my Westbrook notes....mostly from TED, thank you TED

Westbrook was one of several pipes (Berwyck, Belvedere, Emperor, and Sculptura) that were made by Grabow and distributed by R. J. Reynolds as coupon pipes.

A coupon was placed into bags of Carter Hall and George Washington tobacco that was redeemable for these Grabow pipes.  5 coupons and $2.  Then 10 coupons and $2.   Westbrook was 5 coupons and $3.00 later in its life.  This offer started in the mid-50's and ended in the late 80's. It was the longest running redemption offer in history.  The WESTBOOK was sold as a coupon pipe through RJ Reynolds.  The RJR coupons ceased about 1974, but DG continued to honor them another 10 years until about 1985.

The pipe....Westbrook was probably the finest pipe (long term) made by Grabow.  It used the 2 top grades of wood for the smooth (A and E) and even the rustic used better quality briar than anything comparable.    It was available in EVERY SHAPE made by Grabow, and went through EVERY manufacturing step. It was said that there were 127 steps in making a Grabow (that number will vary ), but Westbrook went through all of them.   Westbrook rustics are actually carved twice. The deeper carving was done on a modified drill press while the finer lines were carved "by hand" using a wire cup brush.

Several of the "regular" Grabow lines evolved from Westbrook.  Starfire, Viscount, Eldorado, and Commodore. Starfire is the most comparable in shapes, finishes, and quality.

Again thanks to TED and other "old timers" for the info freely shared on the forum.

Lets see your Westbrooks!
I'll go first:

Nice ones Dave
Never seen a sandblasted Westbrook.
Have you seen others, or is this one unique?

You know, I am not sure. This one may have been sandblasted by Carl Purdy and I don't have it anymore ... someone traded me out of it or I sold it somewhere along the way.

Don't believe I have ever seem another sandblasted Westy ... but then my memory is not what it used to be! Dave

Thanks Gerald.  You know with all the ones I've blasted, I haven't done one for myself.  Guess I need to fix that.

As for the Westy's shown so far.....nice ones fellas!  I'll try to get mine up soon.
TigerJack

I have 3  81's , The smooth pipe is the older version I think as it has the slim stem? My picture taking lacks a lot but I do have one clear picture I will show of just the smooth pipe so someone can tell me for sure if it is indeed the older version.

Older version??
Benton

My Westbrook acquisition disease is flaring up here.

Those are some real beauties guys. Spade, thanks for starting these threads. I very much enjoy reading the history on each of these Grabow models, and all the eyecandy isn't too bad either. Smile

JoeMan

I've got a few ...

Spadefan

Good looking Westys
JoeMan

Someone may ask about that saddle-stem Westy 81.  This is not on any shape chart, and there seem to be very few of these out there.  One of the guys had one just like it...but something about it was different...either different spade, stamping...brain not recalling just what, but it wasn't a Westy with orange spade.  Carl is bidding on a saddle-stem Grand Duke 81 currently.

Can't speak to the Grand, but as for the Westy...Tom said that being a coupon pipe...Grabow had to fill orders no matter what...so"If" it was a situation where they ran out of that tapered stem, they'd have grabbed the next one which would work to fill the order.

Thought I'd share the info I knew, since it's history on the current line we're talking about.
Oldredbeard

Very nice pipes Joe. I remember the other saddle 81 also, but don't remember what was different either.
pwoodard

Great looking group of Westy's Joe.  Thanks for sharing.

Youre welcome.  Happy to.  Part of my motivation is to learn more about Grabow and Linkman pipes.

So, a note to all forum members; please add any notes or recollections you have to the brief histories I start these threads off with.  My notes, Im sure are not all the info available on this forum.
Tiki Vegas

The seller seems to think this Westbrook has been shortened. Looks like it agrees with the shape charts as a 10 or 11.

Oldredbeard

I can't tell that it's been shortened. He also has what may be an unstamped 84.

In picture 4, it appears that the button may have been filed in by hand...maybe after the original button was chewed or chipped?  That's all I can figure.
