Need stem for Dr G Belvedere appleI bought three pipes today in a local antiques store: a Dr G Belvedere apple, an Omega, and a WDC small Wellington. When I saw them in the case, I thought the WDC was also an Omega, but, obviously, it wasn't. Anyway, when I got them home this afternoon and cut away the old Softie pipe bit that was on the end of the Belvedere, I found the entire end of the stem had been bitten off. I guess that's why the Softie was there in the first place.
I'd just like to know if anyone on this forum has, or knows where I can get, a stem for this Belvedere? I'm open to negotiation for possible ways of payment.
Thank you,
Terry

It should be an Ajustomatic. Later Linkman's threads will match. Not sure about Kaywoodies.

It is an Adjustomatic stem; the diameter of the shank is .5 inches. Of course, I can probably alter a stem that's a little larger than that. I'd like to have an original stem with spade, if possible. My daughter took her camera to a Rascal Flats concert tonight. I'll try to post a picture sometime this weekend.
Thanks.

Terry,I've found a stem from an old Westbrook that might work for you. It's slightly bigger-about 9/16" and is 3 1/16" long. Kinda chewed up but complete. Has a yellow spade. If you think you can use it PM with you address.

Guys....If you could do your measurements in MM's, maybe I could help.
If that is a #10, or a #12.....Lg. or Sm. mediun it is 15mm wide at the shank and 78 mm's long. If it is a #11....senior it is 16mm's wide and 69mm's long. If it is the #72....slim, it's 13mm's by 90mm's.
All the male parts in the stem (from the mid 60's..forward) are interchangable, as are the female aluminum in the shank.
Tough part is the flushing, cause each stem was flush sanded to that ONE PARTICULAR STUMMEL. Because of the "overturn".
Terry, you should be able to make it fit. If you were to need some tips, just holler.
Part of my job when I first started was to work with H.R. Freedle who repaired Customer returns-smoked. Took more "pains" and pride than anyone I knew. Still have a pair of needle nose pliers that he made. The tip is bent at 90 degrees so he could pull out cleaners. Still use them in my tackle box.....ted

Ted,tried measuring with M&Ms.Kinda tricky lining them suckers up in a straight line!! Actually my brain just will not adjust to metrics!! But the ruler I used does have metrics on one side. This stem measured 7.8 CM long and about 13 MM wide.If I read it right!!

Sorry Guys.....I was just forced to work with them before they were "universal".....Not here though.
It's kinda funny.....Bits were ALWAYS in mm's, but the holes in the bit and the shank were inches. DUH.....

Ted, according to my handy-dandy on-line conversion table, .5 inches is 12.70 mm. I don't know how long the stem is, and I'm not at my computer right now. The wife and I had to take the oldest back to school from Fall break today, so right now I'm on a hotel computer in Nashville.

That is odd. Maybe because... Oh crap Im too tired to ponder.
But I will. MAybe because the aluminum tenons were machined (in mm's) elsewhere?

OS, got the stem in today's mail. Thanks for the polish job; I'm lousy at that. Bowls, I can shine up pretty well, but stems, forget it. It appears to be just a mite smaller than the shank, but it screws into the shank just fine.
Thanks, again. If you ever need anything, just holler.

A mite might be, or it might not be. | Quote: | | It appears to be just a mite smaller than the shank |
Is that in mm or inches?
Glad you got your pipe fixed, Terry.

Terry, glad the stem worked for you! As for shining it up you are welcome. Actually it needed to be de-oxidized,but that would have meant an overnight soak in some bleach solution, then hand sanding to remove the pitting that results from the bleach and then buffing. That would have cost you!! LOL!! I read somewhere that the pro's and experienced amateurs buff the oxidation off. I have never had any luck removing oxidation with the buffer, especially if it is heavy!

Dr B, a 'mite' is just a 'smidge' smaller than a 'tad.' I've been out of town the last few days, and away from ANY computers. I can see I have a lot of catching up to do, but it's too late today. We just got home about an hour ago, and I'm beat. I've been driving about 10 hours today.

Here's a photo of the Belvedere with the new stem. If you look closely, you can see the stem/shank joint isn't flush, but it's only a mm or two off. I can live with it. I don't do mm's or cm's. We used to measure range and distance in meters and kilometers, but didn't work much with anything smaller.
