New MemberI've been lurking here for a week or two, and figured it's time to introduce myself. My name is Terry (who'da guessed?), and I've been a pipe smoker since 1966, when I was 14 years old. My parents gave me a Dr Grabow Duke bent apple and a pouch of Sir Walter Regular for Christmas that year. There's a story in that, but that's for another time. Through the years I've owned, and lost many Dr Grabows, mainly through my own ignorance and ineptness.
Presently, my pipe conglomeration is in the neighborhood of 600-650 pipes, but I'm not a collector. I tend to accumulate pipes rather than collect them. And, yes, I smoke them all, some more than others, of course. Right now, I have only 4 Dr Grabows, 2 Collector 2001's (black sandblast billiard), and 2 Big Pipes (one smooth, the other carved, oversized apple shape). The Big Pipes have no markings to indicate they were made by Dr Grabow, but I do still have the Lane Limited Guarantee cards that came with them.
I'm looking forward to reading the different posts and putting in my two cents worth from time to time.
BTW, you'll have to keep this forum on the QT. I used to buy Custombilt pipes for hardly any money....but, then Bill Unger wrote his book and everybody and his brother had to have one.
Thanks for letting me into your company,
Terry

Back when parents understood what a 14 year old boy really wanted for Christmas.

Take a photo. I'll use it next time my wife starts complaining about my couple hundred.

The cat may already be out of the bag. We're noticing some exhorbitant vintage DG bids on eBay this past year.

To all:
Yeah, I usually get this reaction when people find out how many pipes I have. What can I say? I loooove pipes, love to look at them, love to handle them, love to smoke them, just love them in general. I've always been this way. When I was just little and Mom would drag us to the grocery store, I'd spend most of my time there just looking at all the pipes (DG's, Medicos, Whitehalls, Yello-Boles, Kaywoodies, Falcons, etc) and tobaccos (Sir Walter, Half and Half, Brush Creek, London Dock, George Washington, Carter Hall, Union Leader, Bull Durham, just so many). And this fascination has continued through the years. In the seventies, I worked part-time in a Tinder Box store. I never actually had any of my paycheck to spend. I'd just endorse it and give it to the manager. He'd apply it to my purchases of the last two weeks.
In recent years, I've gotten worse, if anything. Now I buy collections, not just individual pipes. Usually, I tell myself I'll just keep a few and sell the rest. But, so far, I have only sold, or traded, a dozen or so pipes, and I miss each and every one of them every day.
I know I've got it bad, but I always say, if you're going to have a vice, you might as well indulge it to excess.

Ya Terry, you got it bad!By my calculations you got only 1% Grabows. You either need to buy more or rid yourself of others..
Great introduction. I was under the impression the Bill's book didnt drive up the prices of Custombilts. Or, actually that was said in one of the expert reviews. anyway, thats why we're not writing a book..
Thanks for joining, and I look forward to the story:

Do American made Alphas count? I purchased three or four of those before production was discontinued. And, the more I read of this forum, I'm re-evaluating my apparent disregard for DG's in the last few years.

Terry, please start an Alpha topic in the pipes area. We have discussed the DG Alpha several times, but you may the first person who actually has one. Tell us where you purchased them, what you paid (if that's okay), how they were fit and finished, etc.
We are very interested in the short-lived DG Alpha pipes.

In my book, yes. Especially if it warrants its own topic! I'll have to re-read the one article written on them. I thought they were still Israeli pipes.
Its all part of the history that is Grabow. Lookking forward to your thread.

My wife is standing at the foot of the stairs, yelling that if we don't want to miss Sunday School, we'd better get going. Just goes to show you how far gone I am on reading anything on pipes and tobacco. If I get some time this afternoon (read: If she doesn't have plans for us), I'll try to scan a couple of my Alphas for you.
