New Sales Campaign for Dr. Grabow pipesI have been giving some thought to what should be done in a promotional way to sell new Dr. Grabow pipes. We all know that "sex sells" and it has been employed in one manner or another for YEARS -- years ago a bit more subtle, and these days, just about with no holds barred.
TED is familiar with the gal they used in the 1970s, Erin Gray, I think, as in the following ad:
Now, I know Yello-Bole had an ad in the 1970s that actually featured a girl with a pipe in her mouth as a gimmick, but I think this needs to be taken up a notch, and actually feature some "poster" women that truly look as though they might smoke a pipe. I have done some initial searching and have found two candidates for Jim Martin to consider. The first is this one:

Also, we must not ignore the many segments of our population and should get representatives from many walks of life, and some to represent minorities. McDonald's excells in this and I see no reason to limit our advertising campaign. I searched far and wide and have come up with another "poster" girl that I am sure will not only catch the eye of men, but will also show that pipe smoking by women is truly cool as well:

Just think of what this will do for Dr. Grabow pipe sales, especially when utilized throughout the new official Dr. Grabow website!
By now, you know I am presenting this all tongue-in-cheek for a bit of a chuckle (I hope). In all seriousness, you may or may not know that Google has posted a slew of old photos on line from the old LIFE magazine, some of which have never been published. It's great to look around at them:
LIFE magazine photos having pipes:

LIFE magazine photos having to do with Tobacco:
http://images.google.com/images?h...rce%3Alife&btnG=Search+Images
I have also checked "pipe shops", "cigar stores" and several other things hoping to find in the photos of Chicago, maybe one of Dr. Grabow, Linkman or the factory. Found some nice interior shots under "drug stores", and a few even had pipe displays visible, but NO Dr. Grabow displays that I could make out. There are also quite a few great shots of men with their pipes, but none that I could say for sure was a Grabow. Still, it's well worth the time to look around and it would be great to see what other folks turn up in their searches. --RJ--

How about this girl? Her name is Vickie. She is smoking one of my pipes and making fun of me indicating that I'm the devil, which is pretty close to the truth. The second pic is of her and me at Score Bar, Olongapo, Subic Bay.

I love Olongapo!! Wonder if the Tally-ho is still there? Paulines?

I don't think any of the girls were interested in my pipe when I was there; it's been a long time since I was in the PI, though, and the old-timers has kicked in. How about Sunny's or 1 4 D Road, they still around?

Paulines was bought out about 2 years ago and has been replaced by an upscale disco/GRO hi-tech nightclub. I think Griff's is the last of the old Subic City strip joints left - there is Oriental Rose,Midnight Rambler, Mango's that have been around awhile but mostly brand new clubs - 6 or 7 in Barrio Barretto, two new clubs/hotels in Baloy Beach and more on the way. Subic is starting to catch up with Angeles City as far as the good action goes. Dreyden's restaurant was bought out by Mo from A/C and is now a GRO club as well as still being the best restaurant in Barretto. If you don't know the 'new' lingo, GRO is 'guest relations officer', and there is no 'bar fine' it is an 'early work release' payment.
I will be there January 8 - February 5 for a little R & R. I'll post some pic's of the main drag in barrio barretto, Olongopo and Baloy Beach. You won't recognize the place!

And the problem is?

I guess Marilyn's is among the dearly departed, too? "Guest Relations Officer", "early work release payment"? Has the PI gone PC now, too? And, how about the street vendors? Can you still get "monkey-on-a-stick"?

The Philippines, like a number of other third world countries, adopted a number of laws at the insistence of the US during the Bush Administration that are on the books but only sometimes enforced. Anti smoking laws, for example are enforced at airports and and major resorts that cater to foreign visitors but not in ordinary bars or working class/business class hotels.
Anti prostitution laws are on the books but appear to be used simply as a method of collecting bribes. In the 80's Mayor Lin cracked down on Ermita, chasing most of the play4pay clubs out of that area of Manila. After those places closed, it became apparent that the real motive was to grab the real estate at extreme bargain prices.
After the Navy left Subic, the Mayor passed a law against dancing in bars, live music, disco music etc effectively closing all the Barrio Barretto clubs. Subic City clubs continued to operate but business dwindled to almost nothing.
Meanwhile Angeles City was thriving. That was the situation for about a dozen years.
When the new highway between Angeles City and Subic Bay was close to completion, the Barrio Baretto laws were suddenly changed and the new Mayor - the husband of the Mayor who had passed those laws - became a partner of several new hotels and nightclubs on/near the beach. Then Dave, the owner of Kokomo's hotel and the Voodoo, Lolipop, Treasure Island and several other Angeles City nightclubs began selling his clubs and buying old hotels in Baloy beach and buildings on the highway in Subic. Lo and behold, a year after the highway cut the travel time in half from Angeles City to Subic, the town is thriving.
I have been going there and to Thailand every few months since I retired in Jan. '04. Hotel rates are reasonable $65 on the beach, less across the street. Beer is about $1.25, cocktails $1.50, dinners between $5-10 and EWR which covers everything except an optional tip is $40 all night.

Erin Gray was always one of my favorite "TV" girls. She was also one of the Virginia Slims girls. Great ad campaign. She is still very attractive, maybe we should suggest that IPA contact her for a new series of ads.
Hey - does anyone here have the list of women who are pipe smokers? I had the darn thing at one time but I can't find it any more. It was quite a good sized list and included contemporary personalities (Andie McDowell) as well as historical figures (Madam Curie). I'd sure love to find that again so I could show it to my wife. Probably won't help, but I could try.

Thanks for the update, Lefty. It's been a lot of years since I was in Oolangopo or Angeles City. Sounds like the prices aren't too much higher than the last time I was there; I think the exchange rate was about 16 p to the dollar then. But, you could get a better rate off base, if you knew where to go. Hoist a San Mig for me next time you're there.

There was a mention somewhere on this Forum about Dr. Grabow corn cob pipes and their experimentation growing their own corn, etc. Should this be revisted, I have given further thought for a promotional ad campaign for the new Dr. Grabow Corn Cob pipes. Herewith is a photo for the full-page ad:

Well, OK, on second thought, maybe not. My bad. Perhaps go back farther in history and use this classic:

OK, joking aside, here's a worker fashioning a cob pipe in Washington, Missouri from those great LIFE photos now available online:
Heck of a machine there! Looks totally safe to me . . . --RJ--

No gloves,no safety glasses,no guard on the machine. Wonder if OSHA has ever been in there? From the looks of his fingers I'd say he's had a mishap or two!! Only General Mac. could look right smoking one of those!!

That machine is classic! I can hear him instructing the new guy,"Now hold onta it reel good and don't let it get away from ya!"

That machine is down right lethal and who would of said anything to General Mac even if he does look like a wanker with that pipe sticking out of his mouth, the vain sod
