NOS Hillcrest and Reworked 07 Freehand.

Guess the Freehand should have went into the Before and after section but I didn't take before pics and since I just finished it today and the Hillcrest came in today's mail figured I just post them together !

The Freehand has been an on again off again project for several months. Seems like Dave W. sent this one to me. It was decent but had a pretty chewed ABS stem that could have been fixed.  I have never liked the "Fancy" freehand style stems in Grabows or any other brand of pipes--just don't like 'em !! Dug out this Grabow acrylic and drilled it for a 3/8 delrin tenon and opened it up to 5/32" and made the funnel wider and deeper.  I also do not like the rusticated rims and shank end of the Freehands so I topped it and redid the end of shank with different rustication.Did that because it had a flaw/pit in end of shank. Rusticated the bowl with one of my dental burs. No stain, just a single coat of Halcyon II.

The Hillcrest will get broken in over the weekend during a trip to Rockford,Illinois to visit my brothers and sister there.

Very nice job on that rustication!  Stem looks great with it!

Very nice #118...where'd that baby come from?

118 huh? I wasn't sure what it was-hadn't taken the time to look it up!

It's not on the chart which RJ made, because nobody had ID'd that shape.  I threw together a new chart last year, since a few shapes have been found since the time RJ made his.

Sweet pipes!

I don't care for the Freehand's for the exact same reasons, looks much better now.

Nice work! The stem and stain work great together on the freehand. Love the rustication. Not a big fan of the original freehand rustics.

Not to highjack the thread, but have you seen Oldbeards faux sandblast/rustic treatment he's done on freehands? That's a great look too.

Keep it up. I love seeing these resto-mod customs.

Thanks Dave ! No stain on the freehand--just wax.
Faux sandbags? I should remember that--but don"t. Embarassed

He used a dremel or something on the rim to try giving it a natural burl look, didn't he?

Yeah, that's it. I've seen other faux plateau textures, but Tim's is one of the most convincing. Very impressive.

Man, really dig that Hillcrest, trade you a Colombian... Freehands never stik around here for the same reason, like that dental bur "wire" carving. Might be alone on this but I think restemming them with a fatter tapered stem that registers flush with the shank would look good.
