Pipe RacksI need pipe racks. Over the years I have broken every rack and stand that I had, always ment to mend them, lost the pieces....well, you know. I've got less than 40 pipes, but now that I've joined up with this crowd, I have this feeling that I might be getting a few more. Not quite as many as RJ (good Lord man, I still can't get over that photo of your room)
Here's the deal- I really don't care much for what I have seen commercially available. Don't care for the design, don't care for the cost -given that I don't care for the design. I've got a friend who owns a millwork shop, this fellow does a bit of work for me now, he and his boys do excellent work, we're talking high end commercial casework and free standing furniture. I'm going to get him to knock out some racks for me.
I have to design them, draw them up for him. What would you guys want in a custom made rack? You all have been racking pipes for years, so surely you must have some pet peaves or special requests.
And of course, these are going to be knock-down, easy to assemble and prefinished solid hardwood. I'm thinking cherry. Open for suggestions.
Let me know.....might be a few extras to pass around.

Cherry sounds nice. My suggestion would be a 50 pipe capacity! I've got an revolving 18 pipe rack full of Grabows,w/a 6 pipe rack on top for my Vikings.A 20pipe rack is full with most being Grabows.I then have at least 18 more pipes around the garage. These little bugger's multiply just like rabbit's!LOL

Natural(unstained) Cherry would be nice! I have seen racks that show the pipes in profile. I like racks that have slots cut for the stems instead of holes, easier to set the pipe in place. If we were not so far apart I'd give this cherry I have to you and Steve. At the rate I'm going it will take me a 100 years to use it up. I am making a small holder for tampers-holds 5. Also started on a rack using half of an deer antler rack with a base of cherry.

That's my kind of rack, Ed. I like that profile type of display. I'll bet you can get more pipes into less space that way.

Thats probably true Terry. I like that you can see more of the pipe besides the bowl chamber.

Yeah, I like that style too!!! I could probably sell all my Decatur 36-pipe racks for what I got in them.
The open slots help for large diameter and bents, too, that sometimes just won't go into the holes, not to mention churchwardens. Like the side-angles and the alternating of the rows. Those are both nice looking racks, OS! --RJ--

Yes they are some nice looking pieces. I wish I had the tools to make something like this. Wouldn't be to hard except for those little divots the bowls sets in. Got a garage full of tools for working on cars etc. but never bought much in the way of wood working tools. Hoping to change that after Jan.next year.
