Problems with a new Cardinal and Lark pipe finish. This past weekend I made a trip to JR Cigars in Burlington, NC and bought 12 new DG's. I have noticed blistering on the finishes of both the Cardinal and the Lark; I do not smoke my pipes hot before you suggest that, have any of you encountered this finish blistering on any of your pipes? Is it related to a particular color or finish, pipe curing process? Is there anything I can do to prevent it?

0000 steel wool then buff the snot out of it and finish off with a nice coat of wax! How thick are the walls on these pipes? 12 new pipes? Wow!

Ooooh, I gotta get some of that stuff! Do I have to wait until the lacquer blisters?
How can I tell when I'm through buffing? I don't know what pipe snot looks like.

Thanks for the advice! The Lark was the typical small bowl, thin walled. The Cardinal was a billiard shape with decent wall thickness. I just haven't seen this happen for a while with any new GD's I've purchased in recent months.

No you don't have to wait until the laquer blisters but it helps!! You can speed the process by heating bowl with a propane torch for a minute or two! Pipe snot is first identified by the odor-smells like mixture 79! Smell is followed by great green gobs of greasy grimy gopher gut looking stuff! When it stops coming out of the pores in the briar your'e done!!

I bought a new CARDINAL among some others just to see what IP&A was offering, but have had no blistering problems yet. I have a large rotation, so probably have only smoked it four or five times so far. --RJ--
