Purdy-James Billiard Collaboration.

I started this pipe 3-4 months ago for a gent in Erie,PA. He likes smooth billiards with a slight bend in the stem. This would have been the second pipe I made for him.

The briar in this one did not cooperate,it had several tiny sand pits and also a spot of plateau on the edge of the rim that I couldn't take out without making it to short.

I've been wanting to get Carl to do some sandblasting for me so we worked out a deal.

When I sent it to him I told him I wanted the color to match that ring in the stem--I sent him a bigger piece of that material so he could get a better idea of the colors in it--it Tortoise shell acrylic.

This is what he sent back to me-just got it today. Couldn't be happier! I love the color and the blast. It's not a deep craggy blast but it beautifully accentuates the grain and birds eye in the briar. The contrast stain is just perfect to my eye. I prefer lighter colored pipes but also like a little contrast.

If you're wondering why that ring is in the middle of the stem it's because I had two short pieces of that Pearl white material ( Inlace Acrylester ) . I could have just butted them together but thought a contrasting ring might look interesting.
Thinking I need to do a Golden Morta--and send it to Carl!!

Carl--the Grandson will NOT be getting that duckcall !! It's too pretty for a kid!

Majestic!! Bravo Ed!!

Ed,  glad it finally got there!  I checked the tracking this morning it was still in columbia Shocked

Fellas all I can say is Ed makes a hell of a pipe.  That things has one of the smoothest open draws on it, I've ever found in a pipe  (Yes I did test the draw Embarassed  but I cleaned all the essence of C.E. off before I sent it back. Laughing )

I hope you enjoy it!  It certainly was a different sort of challenge, and I still have a lot to learn.

That duck call goes to your grandson!  I did NOT make that one, got it in some other stuff awhile back.  Take a close look at the stopper it aint turned right,  and all mine have tone boards made by hand out of wood, not that premade plastic stuff.  Let him blow it till the cows come home, or until it drives you bonkers whichever comes first. Laughing

Awesome work and great collaboration!!!! Don't think I've seen rustication like that. Reminds me of Ostrich leather.

Carl, I'm gonna have to send you my Dr Grabow Thang down to the road. (I originally typed this quickly and didn't put "Dr Grabow" in there... that would have been awkward...)

I wanted to put this pic up to show the larger piece of acrylic that Ed sent for me to use a color guide.  It has a creamy color in it that I wanted to capture in the briar and the darker contrasting areas as well.

Ed I forgot to put this little piece in the box Embarassed  If you need it back let me know and I'll get it going.  Also still have the test block I blasted if you want that too.

Carl, don't need that piece of acrylic or the test piece. I have a couple of rods of that Tortoise shell. It's my favorite stem material.
