Sparta made Bartlett

Tom can confirm, but I believe this to be a Sparta-made Bartlett.  Sandblasted briar, has the coloring of a Sculptura.

It has a threaded aluminum cap with a pinhole in the center (which I'm sure was designed to act like a carburetor),  and a screen in the bottom. So, you load it from the top, and light it from the bottom once the cap is back on.

Quoting Tom from a few years ago:

"Patent was bought from Dan Biencino (sp) somewhere in NH. Produced them for about 2 years in various qualities.  They were horrible smokers so in about 1981/2 we gave the patent back to him. Even tried to make a cob version."

Loaded it halfway with Barbados Plantation, gave it a good tamp, and lit it up.

Only needed to tamp a couple of times along the way..

When you clench and talk, it's funny to watch smoke come out the bottom...

I am certainly no genius, but I think I cracked the code for smoking one of these. Barbados tasted wonderful, only required one re-light, very little tamping needed, and while the pipe warmed up a good bit, the smoke itself was quite cool.  This one is no novelty, it will get smoked!

Unusual pipe, never seen one of those, Congrats!!!

Very nice. I've never heard of lighting in from the bottom. That is an odd but cool smoker.

Try reversing the stem and smoke it screen side up.

What a odd pipe.

the screen rusts through on most of the older ones. the early ones also have patent #, so it is probably a newer one. Odd ducks to smoke, like driving  an english RHD car

Well...we know that if Grabow made it (which I believe they did)...it was during the couple year period before they "gave the patent back" in 81/82...so, late 70's / 1980-ish.  This one has no stampings.

I wonder if Grabow sold any with the spade (like this one), or, if they added 'Dr. Grabow' stamping to any of them.

This one was actually handed to me by the guy who does the stamping at the factory...he had it stashed away in his drawer for years.  I'm sure he liked it when it was made, but decided it needed to go with me.
BarberTrey

? Well that is interesting.
