Special Golden Duke

This is a pipe given to my dad by Tom. Dad never got to smoke the pipe, but he did get to hold it and talk about it. It brought him back to a time when he smoked a pipe and all the stories about those days. I can never thank Tom enough for that time.

That said, I've some questions for those in the know.

What shape would you call it?
What DG number would it have had back in the day, if any?

Notice how the top of the bowl is canted a bit, like a cutty.  Dimensions are roughly 5 1/4 length, bowl is 1 3/4 high by 1 1/4 wide. Stem has just the slightest downward turn.

It came from Sparta new and stem is new Grabow, not vulcanite. Rich darker brown in color. Beautiful and beautiful to smoke!

Frank...it's a billiard, and the shape looks to be a 36s (s = saddle bit).
Wildcat

Still considered a billiard with the bowl canted forward like that? Thought perhaps DG had another name for it or some such.

Just took a peak at some 36s pics real quick. Yeah, that seems about right. Thanks Joe. If I remember correct, Tom said he asked for something special. I say this because in my mind this doesn't look like current Sparta offerings found in blister packs. So maybe a combo of old and new. Briar is real nice. I can find only one tiny fill and you have to look for it.

I believe it is a 36Y--long saddle bit stem. An "S" is a short saddle bit and they generally have a longer shank, kinda like a lovat--IIRC.

That's a dandy!  I like both the 36S and the 36Ys...

The family connection seals the deal, too.

Good stuff.

I was tempted to say lovat, but as you said, definitely not like any lovat I've had or have.

@vwdeano: It's a keeper for sure!

I got that bass-ackwards!  The "S" is the long saddle stem--"Y" is short.

Funny thing tho, if you look up lovat in google images, a lot of folks take liberties with the term and include long and short saddle stems and shanks. Traditionally it should be a long shank with short saddle, not vice-versa. A saddle bit canadian if you will.

A lot of guys posting images and selling pipes don't know their shapes very well.  Wink
