Thought I'd burned the rimI was lighting my Omega the other day and while puffing thought the bowl rim looked funny. Sure enough it looked like I'd just burned it. After cursing myself for a durn fool, (not my exact words), I scraped at the discolored rim with my fingernail. It scraped off! All I had done was to burn the finish as the wood underneath was fine.
After that the pipe would look funny with a partially finished rim so I used lacquer thinner to strip the rest of my pipe. Under that shiny finish was a beautiful piece of wood.
The wood under the lacquer is a uniform satin finish red-brown. The burl features are seen better so my pipe is prettier now.
As far as I can tell it smokes the same as before. I do know to be careful of the rim now.

Cool.
Try rubbing in a little olive oil to the wood and it will look the balls.
Would like to see a pic!
There's a thread for "tricked" out omegas somewhere here. They seem the most often modified pipe around...
Personalizing it is fun.
Thanks,
Tom
